Douglas Lundholm Obituary

Douglas “Doug” R. Lundholm, age 91, loving husband, devoted father, and loyal friend, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on May 27, 2016 at Orchard Hills Assisted Living in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Doug was born August 23, 1924, on his family’s farm near Chetek, Wisconsin, to the late Arvid and Lillian (Johnson) Lundholm. He grew up on the farm, attended school in Barron and Chetek, and graduated from Chetek High School in 1942. Following high school he entered the U.S. Army and served near the end of World War II in occupied Japan. After returning from army duty, Doug married Loretta Osberg of New Auburn, Wisconsin, on June 29, 1947. They made their home and raised their family in Eau Claire, living there until the early 1980s when they moved to a home on Lake Wissota near Chippewa Falls, WI. After 25 years of enjoying their lake home, they moved back to Eau Claire in 2004. Doug began his working career in the late 1940s as an accountant with the C.A. Irwin Company. In the early 1960s he made a career change, becoming a licensed real estate broker. After working with Wayne Jensen Homes for several years, he then opened his own real estate agency, which he operated for approximately 15 years. He later affiliated with other Eau Claire agencies, the last being Coldwell Banker Brenizer. He loved the real estate business and continued working well into his 80s. Doug was a civic and service minded person and over the years gave of his time and energy to several organizations, among them the Lions Club, Elks Club, Optimists, and others. He became a member of the Eau Claire Valley of Scottish Rite Freemasonry in the 1967, was a member of Eau Claire Lodge 112, served as master for 1 year and belonged to the ZOR Shrine of Madison and the Mehara Shrine Club of Eau Claire. He served as Executive Secretary of the Eau Claire Scottish Rite for 17 years. He received the Scottish Rite 33rd degree in September 1992, which was a great honor Dyslexia Center of Upper Wisconsin for the diagnosis and treatment of children with dyslexia, located at the Masonic Temple of Eau Claire.for him. He continued attending Masonic meetings and functions, participated in charitable fund raising activities, and enjoyed going to the weekly Wednesday soup lunches until the past few months. He also cared a great deal about the Masonic-sponsored for Doug was a longtime member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eau Claire. He served in various capacities over the years, at one time as treasurer, and often as a Sunday usher. In recent years, he enjoyed being part of a breakfast group with several men from church who meet once a week, and whose friendship and support he so appreciated. Doug was an avid sports fan his entire life. In his younger years he played softball on various leagues, refereed high school football, was quite a good bowler, and played golf his entire life until just a few years ago when he had to give it up. He especially loved golf and played with family and friends whenever he had the opportunity. He also was a big fan of the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Brewers, and before that the Milwaukee Braves. He attended many Brewer games on family outings. Doug was very patriotic and proud to be an American. A highlight of his life was being able to make the Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. in 2011. He was deeply moved by that experience and was so thrilled to have had that opportunity. Doug leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Loretta, currently at Dove West in Eau Claire; five children: Vicki Gillett, Presque Isle, WI; Jim (LouAnn) Lundholm, Fort Collins, CO; Sue Brown, Nancy Weber, both of Minneapolis; and Mary (Kevin) Dettmann, Eau Claire; grandchildren: Travis (Alicia) Willer, New Port News, VA; Nick Brown, Minneapolis; Emily Brown, North Mankato, MN; and Nolan (Aiyana) Dettmann, LaCrosse, WI; and two great-grandchildren: Jerron Willer, New Port News, VA and Avery Baas, North Mankato; three sisters: Arvena Borgen, New Richmond, WI; Laverna (Bill) Thompson, of Chetek; and Jean (Bill) Labude of Lexington, KY; sister-in-law: Fern Lundholm, Buena Vista, AR; step-sisters: Dona Neby, Comstock, WI.; Carolyn Cizek, Chetek; Leona Puppe, Newbury Park, CA; Judy (Duane) Hanson, Chetek; Betty (Rick) Rockow, Chetek; and step-brother: Bob (Dolores) Johnson, So. Daytona Beach, FL. Preceding him in death are his parents, Arvid and Lillian Lundholm; step-mother, Theresa (Johnson) Lundholm; brothers: Eugene, Woodrow, Lawrence, and Ove, and step-sisters: Arlene Skjerly and Millie Christianson. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 1 from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Avenue, Eau Claire. A Masonic service will follow the visitation. A memorial service will be held at First Congregational United Church of Christ, 310 Broadway Street, Eau Claire, at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 2, with Rev. Dr. Mark X Pirazzini officiating. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Military honors will be conducted by American Legion Post 53 after the service at the church. Inurnment will be at Lakeview Cemetery, Chetek WI. Memorials may be given in Doug’s name to the Dyslexia Center or to First Congregational UCC of Eau Claire.
