Duane Talford Obituary

Duane E. Talford, age 97, of Altoona, WI (formerly of Rock Falls, WI) passed away on Monday, March 26, 2018, at Oak Gardens Place in Altoona, WI. He was born on October 22, 1920, to Plin and Anna (Hysen) Talford on the Talford homestead east of Rock Falls, WI in Dunn County. On September 24, 1977, Duane married Gladys A. Holte, of Springbrook Township, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church. Together they spent 36 loving years together until her passing in 2013. Of those years, 33 were spent raising beef cattle on their farm in Rock Creek. Duane sold his farm in 2010 and moved to Eau Claire, WI. In 2014, Duane moved to Oak Gardens Place in Altoona. Duane enlisted in the United States Army and was discharged in 1944. Following his service, he was employed at the Rock Falls Cooperative Creamery where he spent five years making butter, cheese and then packaging the same for sale. He then worked at Gillett's in Eau Claire until he purchased the Andrews farm in Rock Creek. Duane was baptized, confirmed and married at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, where he was a lifetime member. He enjoyed playing in the Church Dartball League with his father Plin, and brothers, Elton, Robert and Kenneth. In his younger years, Duane did some custom thrashing and baling for the neighbors and assisted his brothers on their respective farms. Family was important to Duane and as a young man you might find him at Kohler Skating Rink near Durand, WI or at Fournier's Dance Hall in Eau Claire with his brothers, cousins and friends. Duane enjoyed trips across the United States during his lifetime which he remembered with great fondness. Those trips included Washington, DC to see the monuments, Disneyland in CA, and Yellowstone National Park. He thoroughly enjoyed looking back at photographs of years gone by. Duane is survived by one brother, Robert of Altoona; numerous nieces and nephews; special cousin, Morris Brumberg; as well as other cousins and many friends. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Gladys; parents; three brothers, Arnold (Harriet), Elton (Goldia), and Kenneth (Joyce, Gloria); sister-in-law, Verna Talford; father and mother-in-law, Bert and Inga Holte; and five brothers-in-law, John, Oscar, Harry, Gerhard and Arnold Holte. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2018, at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 1101 810th St., Mondovi, WI (rural Rock Falls) with Rev. Paul Oppedahl officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Interment will take place in Rock Falls Cemetery with Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post 53. Duane’s family would like to thank the staff at Oak Gardens Place and St. Joseph’s Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Duane in his final days.
