Gilbert Liddell Obituary

Gilbert D. Liddell, 70, of Eau Claire, passed away at home on Sunday, July 2, 2017, after a very courageous battle with cancer. Gil was born in Chippewa Falls, WI, the son of Gilbert and Bernice (Nesvacil) Liddell. He grew up on the family farm with his sisters and loving grandparents, Delbert and Bessie Liddell. Gil married Sally Brown on Aug. 14, 1971, and they shared 46+ years together. He worked at National Presto Industries for about 10 years and then at Menards Inc. for over 35 years, retiring in 2010. Gil had an exceptional work ethic and always gave 100%. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting and spending time at the cabin. He especially enjoyed sharing those loves with his family. Gil enjoyed gardening and was always up for the challenge of growing something new! He was creative and loved time in his “man cave” making baits, working with wood, or fixing something. Gil could fix most anything and proved that to his family many, many times through the years. His grandchildren were the true delight and joy of his life, he loved sharing his teasing silly sense of humor with them. His generosity was sometimes overwhelming, always wanting them to have more than he did. If he could say one thing to any one of them it surely would be “I love you the most.” He is survived by his wife, Sally; children, Kimberly Quealy of Austin, MN and Shane (Amber Strandt) Liddell of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Emily (Ryan) Heath and Shane Quealy of Austin, MN, Abigail and Samantha Liddell of Eau Claire; 3 step great-grandchildren, Reggie, Grayson, and Maris of Austin, MN; loving sisters, Judy (Jim) Miller of Cadott, Bonnie (Chuck) Klukas of Chippewa Falls, Susan Braatz of Eau Claire; many nieces, nephews cousins and friends, all of whom he loved. Gil is further survived by Michael Liddell and Alysia Steiger, children from a former marriage; grandchildren, Alexes and Hunter Liddell, Chrystal Steiger, Brittany (Blake) Sykora and Matthew Steiger; and great-grandson, Hendrick Sykora. Gil also leaves behind his loyal golden retriever, Finnigan Storm. He loved that dog! Gil was preceded in death by his grandparents, Delbert and Bessie Liddell and James and Nettie Nesvacil; parents, Gilbert and Bernice ( Nesvacil ) Liddell; mother and father-in-law, Clifford and Irene Brown; a son-in-law, James Quealy; and brothers-in-law, Bill Klukas, Gene Karker and Gordy Braatz, three of the best friends any guy could ever ask for. Gil made the decision after his first battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma to donate his body to Mayo Clinic Cancer Research. His decision was even more confirmed with the most recent diagnosis of Ewing's Sarcoma. His family is proud beyond words of his strength and courage. His gift is given with hopes that research may give insight into the on-going work to find a cure for cancer. The family would like to thank the entire Mayo Team in Rochester, MN and Eau Claire for providing quality care and comfort during Gil's battles. The Mayo Clinic Health System Home Health and Hospice team was incredibly kind and caring. A very special thank you to Sarah and Josh, Gil not only considered them “his nurses” but also his friends. We will be forever grateful. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2017, at Saving Grace Lutheran Church, 2124 Eastridge Center, Eau Claire, with Rev. David J. Irgens officiating. Visitation will be from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be designated for cancer research at Mayo Clinic. Memorials can be made online at www.mayoclinic.org/development or mailed to Department of Development, Mayo Clinic, 200 First St. SW, Rochester, MN 55905.
