Henry Schank Obituary

Henry “Hank” L. Schank, 75, of Altoona, passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at The Classic at Hillcrest Greens, in Altoona, with his wife Sharon by his side. Henry was born on September 27, 1942, in Arcadia, WI, to Clarence and Dorothy (Wicka) Schank. In September of 1944, Henry contracted Polio, which would have lifelong effects on his life. He attended SS Peter and Paul Catholic Grade School in Independence until 5th grade, then began physical therapy on a daily basis at McDonough School for the handicap. During this time, he stayed with his foster parents, Enda and Joe Lippert during the week and went home on weekends. Henry returned to SS Peter and Paul Catholic School for the 8th grade and graduated from Independence High School in 1961. Later that same year, Henry attended the Minnesota School of Business for a 12-week course. After completing the course in 1962, Henry moved home for the summer and started school at the Eau Claire Vocational School, which currently is the Chippewa Valley Technical College. He graduated with an associate degree in accounting in 1964. Just prior to graduation, Henry was approached by the president of the college, Mr. Cecil Beede. Mr. Beede indicated they were in the process of expanding the college to include a new accounting position. Mr. Beede told Henry if he was interested in the position it would be his. Henry accepted the offer and worked at the college for the next 35 years, retiring on September 30, 1999. It was during this time that he “met the love of my (his) life” Sharon Stewart, whom he married on February 26, 2000. Together, they enjoyed each day including playing cards, cooking, entertaining guests, and many scenic day trips visiting family and friends. Henry also enjoyed spending time fishing with his buddy “Chipper” and also with his brother-in-law Rudy. Henry was a very kind and generous person who brought so much joy to many, especially with his infectious smile. Family gatherings and relationships, including his CVTC family, were always very important to him. Henry was active in the local Sunrise Exchange Club, served on the board of Knollwood Village Condominium Association, was treasurer and volunteered for the local Special Olympics Association. Henry is survived by his wife of 17 years, Sharon; brothers, Jerome (Marion), Willard (Celeste) and Donald; sisters, Mary Ann Hergenreder, Rita (Rudy) Zoromski, Elaine (Greg) LeGare and Celine Brandon; step-children, Lisa (Karl) Kundel, Brad (Misty) Stewart and Michelle (Justin) Farner; step-grandchildren, Zachary and Mikayla Kundel, Ashlin, Sever and Sawyer Stewart, Samantha Dodge, Logan, Katelynn and Anneliese Farner; and also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Allen; brother-in-law, Tony Hergenreder; nephew, Darren Zoromski; and niece, Jeanie Schank. The family would like to thank Dr. Anton Kidess, hospice nurse Roxanne, chaplain MaryAnn, aides Beth and Karen, and all the staff with St. Joseph’s Hospice.
