Jerry LaPoint Obituary

Jerry G. LaPoint, 82, of Eau Claire, died Wednesday, April 12, 2017, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Eau Claire. Jerry was born in Eau Claire, on June 1, 1934, a son of Edward J. and Eleanor K. (Hunter) LaPoint. Jerry married Jacqueline A. Youderian on November 28, 1959, at Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. After his graduation from Eau Claire High School in 1954, Jerry served in the U.S. Army from November 1957 until his honorable discharge in October 1962. This included serving 18 months in Korea. Jerry worked at Uniroyal Tire Plant until going to work for the Eau Claire School District in 1961 where he worked for 30 years. He volunteered with after school programs as coach for intramural sports, Little League, and Boy Scouts. Jerry was a part of the AFSCME Local 560, elected to the Executive Board before being elected as President of Local 560. He was elected chair of the International Retiree council in 2004, becoming the first retiree chair to serve on the AFSCME International Executive Board. As an activist for the Eau Claire Democratic Party, he opened his home to political candidate’s staff, starting with Mondale through Clinton. Jerry was the Vice President of the Eau Claire Democrats for many years and attended National Conventions as a delegate from 1988 to 2004. Jerry was also a member of The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Jerry is survived by his wife of 57 years; son, James (Kari) LaPoint, River Falls, WI; daughter, Janis (Joe) Majerus of Shakopee, MN; five granddaughters, Alex (Ian) Steen of Beaver Dam, WI, Bailey and Lexi LaPoint of River Falls, WI, Isabel and Rachel Majerus of Shakopee, MN; three brothers, William (Diane) LaPoint of Ocala, FL, Harold (Donna) and Doug (Rose) LaPoint of Eau Claire; one sister, Lorraine Barber of Hudson, WI; and brother-in-law, James (Kay) Youderian of Ardmore, OK. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Julie Breitzman; his parents; his sisters, Barb Pecka Eva Sauers and Marjorie Gullikson; a brother, Joseph LaPoint; and parents-in-law. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 17, 2017, at The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1120 Cedar St, Eau Claire, with Pastor Peter Soli officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Sunday, April 16, 2017 at the WEST CHAPEL location of Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral and Cremation Services, 1405 N. Clairemont Ave, Eau Claire, and again one hour prior to services. Military Honors will be conducted by VFW Post 305 after services at the church. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery at a later date.
