Alice Elizabeth Smiskey, 95, of Eau Claire, passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at The Classic at Hillcrest Greens in Altoona. She was born on December 29, 1923 in Pepin County, WI, a daughter of William and Minna (Thalacker) Behnke. Alice graduated from Eau Claire High School in 1941 and took a job as a supply clerk at Gillette Tire Company. During the summer of 1942, Alice moved to Washington DC, to support the war effort with her work at the Pentagon. Upon returning to Eau Claire, she met a sailor named Don Smiskey. They were married on September 12, 1946. Alice worked at Samuelson’s Johnson Litho Graphics. Alice enjoyed golfing and the great outdoors. She was the oldest charter member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Eau Claire, having been a member for the past 82 years. Alice is survived by her daughter, Sandy (Richard Hera) Smiskey of Eau Claire; son, Larry (Lisa) Smiskey of Eau Claire; grandchildren, Jacob (Courtney) Smiskey of Cameron, WI, Easton Smiskey of Minneapolis, MN, Kayla (Corey) Olson of Eau Claire and Nathan (Chelsey) Olson of Eau Claire; great-granddaughters, Aurora, Arya and Anniston; great-grandson, Bryce Olson; sister, Gloria Berg of Eau Claire; brother, Bill (Shirley) Behnke of Lawrenceville, GA; sister-in-law, Eileen Smiskey of Eau Claire; and many numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; parents; son, Steven; sister, Elaine Wrigglesworth; brother, Wayne (Dawn) Behnke; brothers-in-law, Cy Berg and Robert Smiskey; sisters-in-law, Eleanore Wensel, Margaret Bjoynton, Marcella Brandl and Mary Ann Strand. The family would like to thank the staff at The Classic at Hillcrest Greens and Mayo Clinic Health System-Home Health & Hospice for all the care shown to Alice. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 15, 2019 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 1915 Hogeboom Avenue in Eau Claire, with Pastor James Whatley officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2019 at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Avenue in Eau Claire, and again one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Burial will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire.
