Doris Rulien Obituary

Doris Evelyn Rulien, 90, passed away on Tuesday, October 30, 2018, at River Pines in Altoona, WI, surrounded by her family. She was born in Eau Claire, on August 11, 1928, daughter of Clarence "CB" and Kate (Krause) Thompson and was proud to tell you she was from Altoona, WI. At the age of 13 Doris had her first real job working for Tender Crust Bakery. She and her sister, Kate, made donuts and Doris also drove the delivery truck. She always bragged about driving at a young age without a license. Doris graduated salutatorian from Altoona public schools in 1946. As a Railroader she performed in the high school band playing the baritone. During her summers, she worked at Camp Pinemere in Minocqua where she taught campers about canoeing and fishing. She always talked about how good the food was and how much weight she would gain over the summer. After high school, she attended college at the Eau Claire Teachers College for one year, then transferred to the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She studied to become a Physical Education teacher. On weekends she rode the train home to Altoona. During World War II, Doris worked at Presto to help the war effort, along with her sister Kate. After the war on June 9, 1951, she married Ron Rulien. In the early 70’s she worked at Einar C. Pedersen Elementary School as an aide. She helped create the girl’s gymnastics program in 1972. In 1983, she worked for her daughter in Barstow Court at Glass House & Studio. Doris had a passion for sports, especially golf, tennis, Wisconsin Badgers and Packers football, and the Winter Olympics. In her younger years, she bowled on a state team and was one of the best softball players in Eau Claire. She also loved spending time at her Lake Eau Claire cabin, where she enjoyed fishing and pontooning. Her other interests included genealogy and learning about her Norwegian heritage. Doris is survived by her daughter, Kathryn (Bob) Rulien-Bareis; grandchild, Kyle (Jessica) Bareis; and great-grandchildren, Katarina and Cameron Bareis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ron, with whom she was married for 64 years; siblings, Ruth, Mae, Janet, Kate, Marion, Bill; and her parents, Clarence "CB" and Kate. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 9, 2018, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1804 Highland Ave, Eau Claire, with Pastor Julie Brenden officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery on the 1800 block of Omaha Street in Eau Claire. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Lake Eau Claire Association. Doris loved her cabin, fishing, and boating on the lake. Memorials will go toward installing a new silt trap near her favorite fishing spot. Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral & Cremation Services is assisting Doris’ family.
