George Leser, age 98, of Eau Claire, died peacefully on December 12, 2018 at Mercy Hospital in Miami, FL. He had been living in Key Biscayne, FL since February 2017 with his son, George. George was born in Joliet, IL on February 22, 1920 to Henry and Catherine Alvina (Hammel) Leser. He married Dolores Fischer on August 4, 1956, In Eau Claire at Sacred Heart Catholic Church and together celebrated 60 years of marriage. George graduated from Joliet Catholic High School in 1938 and attended Joliet Junior College. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. After returning from WWII, he graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. George worked as a civil engineer for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation for 35 years at the district office in Eau Claire. Over the course of his career he worked in various capacities in highway construction, design and planning. He retired as a planning engineer supervisor in March of 1985. George was an avid outdoorsman who loved camping, hunting, fishing, downhill skiing, water skiing and cross-country skiing. He took particular interest in planning his family’s annual vacations to many of the U.S. national parks and major cities. His other interests included tending his dahlia gardens, mushroom hunting and helping his son, George, with his stamp collection. George had been a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church during his his 60 years of marriage to Dolores. He was involved with the Holy Name Society and enjoyed being an usher, lector and assisting in planning and working at the annual church bazaar. George was a lifetime member of VFW Post 305 and always enjoyed selling the red poppies. George is survived by his children, George Leser of Key Biscayne, FL and Catherine (John Manning) Leser of Nashville, TN, brother-in-law, Hubert (Patricia) Fischer, a niece, and three nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and C. Alvina; wife, Dolores; brothers, Henry Leser, Jr., Leo Leser and Clare Leser; and sister, Bernadine (William) Banford. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on December 21, 2018 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 416 N. Dewey Street, Eau Claire with Father Brian Jazdzewski officiating. Visitation will be from 3-6 pm on Thursday, December 20, 2018 with a Rosary Vigil at 4:30 pm at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Eau Claire. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
