Pearl Schafer Obituary

Pearl "Pearly" Anna Hansen Schafer of Eau Claire, Wisconsin peacefully joined her beloved husband of 75 years in heaven on November 12, 2018. She was born on March 10, 1920 to Hans and Julia Hansen of Withee, Wisconsin. She is preceded in death by six loving and supportive siblings and her grandson, Kevin Strey. After working in a pea cannery in Owen, Wisconsin and as a domestic servant and nanny in Chicago, Illinois, Pearl married Eugene Henry Schafer of Owen, Wisconsin on May 29, 1972 in Champaign, Illinois. She was an active member of the military community throughout his 30 years of service in the United States Air Force, and continued her community involvement in Eau Claire, Wisconsin after their retirement in 1970. Pearl was a dedicated mother, grandmother and aunt to the children in her family and she was charitable to marginalized people throughout the world via her church, her local schools and her VFW. She loved to create beautiful quilts, afghans, crafts and clothes and she assisted her husband with his many woodworking projects. The treasured items she made are testimony to the color and diversity she appreciated in others. Pearl was always more interested in giving than receiving and she never forgot to send a birthday, anniversary or holiday card. She always had baked goods on her kitchen counter or “hidden” in her freezer and she was happiest when she had company sitting in her kitchen. Her world class cut-out Christmas cookies will be missed by everyone who ever had the pleasure to enjoy one. She took great pride in her home and her children rarely came home from school to an empty house. Family who preceded Pearl in death were her husband, Eugene; brothers, Harry and James; sisters, Lila, Grace, Velma and Verna; and grandson, Kevin. She is survived by her children, Sharron (Ken) Howland, Glenn Schafer and Bruce (Ruth) Schafer; grandchildren, Dawn (Randy) Dawsey, Ramona (Bill) Jefferson and Christopher Schafer; great-grandchildren, David Strey, Jennifer (Mathew) Martell, Danielle (John) Jackson, JC (Aylin Cetin) Belch; and two great-great-grandchildren. A celebratory recognition of Pearl’s charitable life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on November 19, 2018 at Hope Lutheran Church, 2226 Eddy Lane in Eau Claire with Pastor Mary Erickson officiating. Visitation is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Riverside Cemetery in Township of Hixon, Wisconsin. Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral & Cremation Services is serving her family. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer’s Association for dementia research (alz.org) or volunteer hours at your local memory care facility would be appreciated.
