Obituary

Alvin D. Strand, Sr., 81, of 2002 Dellview St., Eau Claire, died Saturday, October 11, 2003 at the Oakwood Villa in Altoona.\r\nHe was born on October 19, 1921, in Eau Claire, the son of Louis and Minnie (Hanson) Strand. He married Mary F. Cloninger on October 10, 1943 in York, South Carolina. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Friday, the day before he died.\r\nAlvin served in the U. S. Army from October 1942 until November 11, 1945, as a paratrooper in the South Pacific and he worked as a tire builder for Uniroyal Tire Company for 38 years. He was a 50 year member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Chippewa Valley Aerie #2213, serving as President for two terms. He was a Life Member of the VFW Post #305 and a member of Hope Lutheran Church for over fifty years.\r\nSurvivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, Alvin Jr. of Decatur, AL, and Terry (Edythe) of Eau Claire; two grandchildren, Jodi (Brian) Kent of Eau Claire and 1ST Lieutenant Joshua Strand (USMC) of Camp Lejeune, NC; four great-grandchildren who lit up his life in later years, Rachel, Matthew, Mariah and Anna Kent; two sisters, Janna Gunderson of Eau Claire and Gloria Suring of Menomonee Falls, WI; three sisters-in-law, Betty Strand, Marge Strand and Gladys Strand all of Eau Claire; many nieces and nephews.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Henry, Lionel, and David Strand; two brothers-in-law, Conrad Gunderson and Norman Suring.\r\nFuneral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday October 15, 2003 at Hope Lutheran Church with Pastor Roger Benrud officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery in the town of Washington where VFW Post #305 will conduct military rites. Family and Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.\r\n
