Barbara Louise (Zeman) Theiste, 91, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026. She was born on September 2, 1934, in Richland, Kentucky, the only child of Rudolph L. and Florence (Fritz) Zeman, and was raised in Madison, Wisconsin.

Barbara attended Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota, and began her career teaching in a private school in Arizona. On June 16, 1955, she married Rev. Victor I. Theiste, beginning a life of faith, service, and devotion to family. Together they served congregations across Minnesota, Iowa, South Dakota, and ultimately Eau Claire, Wisconsin, where they made their home.

Barbara was the heart of her family-a devoted wife and mother of six children. During her children's early years, she embraced her role as a stay-at-home mother, later returning to the workforce as a medical receptionist. She also worked in a shoe store and as an office cleaner, doing whatever was needed to support her family. She eventually became a receptionist at Lyman Lumber in Eau Claire.

A woman of deep and enduring faith, Barbara lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and quiet strength. She served her church and community in many ways, including as a Sunday School teacher, school volunteer, and Literacy Council volunteer. She had a lifelong love of learning and a natural gift for teaching, which she shared with all who knew her.

She was also a trusted confidante to many-someone who offered sensible, steady guidance during life's hardest moments. Her wisdom was always grounded in love and delivered without judgment. Her children and grandchildren knew, without question, that they were deeply loved and accepted no matter what, and that they could always turn to her for comfort, perspective, and grace.

Barbara's life was also a testament to remarkable resilience. Widowed at the age of 47, she faced the challenge of raising her family and rebuilding her life with courage and determination. Having spent years in church parsonages, she learned to manage a household on her own for the first time-handling finances, maintaining a home, and navigating responsibilities she had never before encountered. Despite financial hardships and the profound loss of her husband and later two of her children, she remained steadfast in her faith and commitment to her family. Her strength, perseverance, and trust in God left a lasting legacy for her children and grandchildren.

She found joy in life's simple pleasures-a good cup of coffee, a warm conversation with a friend, beautiful flowers, and especially time spent with family. She loved all animals, particularly dogs, and enjoyed music, reading, painting, sewing, gardening, cooking, and collecting dolls.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Victor I. Theiste; her parents, Rudolph and Florence Zeman; and her children, Mark Theiste and Jenny Ellingen, and daughter-in-law, Diane (Krinkey) Theiste (wife of son, John).

She is survived by her children: John Theiste (Renee Schaller), Debbie (Ken) O'Brien, Kathy (John) Kensmoe, and Mike (Shelly Pederson) Theiste; her daughter-in-law, Renee (Hargrove) Theiste, her son-in-law, Bob Ellingen; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren, with one more soon to arrive.

Barbara's family is deeply grateful for the love, faith, and strength she shared so freely. Her legacy lives on in the lives of those she touched and in the values she instilled-faith in Jesus, love of family, and compassion for others.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, August 12, 2026 at Concordia Lutheran Church, 3715 London Rd., Eau Claire, WI, with Pastor Paul Webber officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior at the church. Burial will be at Prairie View Cemetery, Chippewa Falls.
