Obituary

Charles W. Michels, age 96 of Eau Claire, died peacefully on Wednesday, April 16, 2014, at Orchard Hills Assisted Living in Eau Claire. Charles was born in Eau Claire on December 5, 1917 to Joseph and Anna (Gilles) Michels. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 and served during WWII from 1942-1945 in the Military Police. Charles married Lorraine Carey on August 13, 1941 at St. Bridget Catholic Church, Town of Seymour. This marriage was blessed with 7 children. He was employed by Sterling Pulp and Paper, Hotel Eau Claire, St. Joseph Hospital and Cut Rate Sewer Company. Charley was a giving man, a social man, a jokester, a bicycle rider, once making the long trek to Cadott, and was a charter member of St. Olaf Catholic Church. Charles is survived by his children; William (Ruth) Michels, Catherine Grant, Edward T. (Jeanne) Michels, Susan (David) Manor, John (Sharon) Michels, Mary (Mark) Heintz, and son-in-law, Jerry Stelzer; grandchildren, Sherry (Raymond), Gary (Coleen), Tony (Priscilla), Greg (Jayme), Lynn (Todd), Christopher (Shelly), Rebecca, Daniel (Polly), Sara (Robert) and Thomas (Alicia); great-grandchildren, Jeremy, Jessica, Leah, Brittany, Sheldon, Aubree, Douglas, Owen, Elliott, Tyler, Trevor, Aleta, Sequoia, Ashton, Gracie and Garrett; and great-great-granddaughter, Skylar. He is further survived by other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 65 years, Lorraine; daughter, Patricia; son-in-law, Douglas; and brothers, Leonard (Lucille) and Thomas. While living at Orchard Hills Assisted Living, he found comfort and friendships in the staff and residents. Thank you Orchard Hills for your smiles, conversations and care provided to him. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 21, 2014, at Lenmark Gomsrud Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Avenue, Eau Claire, with a prayer service beginning at 6:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11a.m. on Tuesday, at St. Olaf Catholic Church, 3220 Monroe Street, Eau Claire, with visitation one hour prior to the Mass at church. Father Brian Konopa will be officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Eau Claire with military honors conducted by the Eau Claire American Legion Post #53. Memorials may be given to St. Olaf Catholic Church in lieu of flowers.
