Obituary

Charles Edwin Opsal, 85, of Menomonie, and formerly of Eau Claire, died Saturday, November 17, 2007, at Red Cedar Medical Center in Menomonie.\r\nHe was born April 23, 1922, to Emmanuel and Jesine (Hoven) Opsal in New York City, New York. At the age of twelve, following the death of his mother, Charles moved from New York City with his father and two brothers to Menomonie to live with an aunt and uncle, Govert and Amelia Behrents.\r\nHe served in World War II with the U.S. Army from January 2, 1943 until November 6, 1945. Charles was in the 99th Infantry Battalion, and took part in the Norwegian-American Ski Troopers, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Occupational Forces in Norway.\r\nOn May 6, 1947, he married Doris M. Hammer in Menomonie. They moved to Eau Claire in 1961.\r\nCharles worked for the U.S. Post Office in Eau Claire as a rural mail carrier, retiring in 1985.\r\nSurvivors include his wife, Doris, of Menomonie; a daughter, Cindy Opsal of Menomonie; two sons, Lyle and Steven of Eau Claire; three grandchildren, Amy (Tom) Lillevold, Christen and Ryan Opsal; two great grandsons, Weston Schlewitz and Aden Lillevold; two step-grandchildren, Andrew and Anthony Schieffer; five step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Stanley and Lloyd Opsal; and a nephew, Bruce Opsal.\r\nMemorial services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at First Lutheran Church, with Pastor Amy Odgren officiating. Burial with Military Honors by American Legion Post #53 will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Eau Claire. Family and friends may call Monday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.\r\nMemorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church, 1005 Oxford Ave., Eau Claire, WI 54703.
