Obituary

Charles E. Sandy, 65, of 1132 Knollwood Trail, Altoona, died on September 10, 2002 with his wife and children at his side.\r\nHe was born in Kansas City, Missouri, on October 3, 1936, the son of Charles E. and Edna (Cravens) Sandy. He received his bachelor's degree from Rockhurst College in Kansas City and his master's degree from Kansas University in Lawrence, Kansas. He married Phyllis (Shortino) on December 29, 1962 in Raytown, Mo. In 1966, he relocated his family to Wisconsin where he became a lifelong Packer fan. \r\nFrom 1966 to 1971, he served as assistant registrar at UWEC. He went on to become registrar at Chippewa Valley Technical College, retiring in 1995. But retirement did not slow him down, in addition to a part-time job at Avalon Floral, Charles was an avid volunteer, fisherman, writer and book collector. His volunteer efforts benefited the public library, St. Francis Food Pantry and the local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous, where he would have celebrated is 9th anniversary next month.\r\nHe is survived by his wife; one daughter, Nancy of Middleton; five sons, Charles (Amy) of Madison, Brian of Eau Claire, Neal (Amy) of Middleton, Kenneth (Kristin) of Hudson, and Paul (Alicia) of Huntington Beach, Calif. Survivors also include eight grandchildren Nicole, Max, Jenna, Brynn, Erin, Kellen, Lauren and Nathan; as well as his three sisters, Norma (Jerry) of Edina, Minn; Marion (Robert) and Virginia, both of Overland Park, Kan. \r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents.\r\nFuneral services will be held on Thursday September 12, at 5:30 pm at the Newman Parish, at the Ecumenical Religious Center, 110 Garfield Ave, with Father George R. Szews officiating. A private family interment will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 p.m. until the time of services on Thursday at the Newman Parish, at the Ecumenical Religious Center.\r\nIn lieu of flowers, Charles specifically requested donations be made to Alcoholics Anonymous, Eau Claire, or St. Francis Food Pantry.\r\nCharles's family and friends will miss his unique sense of humor and tireless wit.
