Charles E. "Too Tall" Dorn, 86, of Eau Claire, passed away on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 at the Wisconsin Veterans Home in Chippewa Falls. He was born to the late Margret (Keilberg) and Charles F. Dorn on June 10, 1926 in Eau Claire. He was a lifelong resident of Eau Claire and graduated from high school in 1944. He joined the Navy and was stationed in Guam serving with the Fighting Seabees rebuilding roads and airstrips. He also worked as a baker and guarded the Japanese P.O.W.'s. After the war he worked for NSP maintaining hydroelectric dams and substations. After 35 years as an electrician, he retired in 1981. While working for NSP, Too Tall met Eva Mae Helwig and the two were married on March 10, 1951 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. In the winter of 1994, Too Tall and Eva traveled to Okinawa, Japan to see their daughter Charlotte and her husband who was stationed in the Air Force. Too Tall will be remembered for selling his vegetables around town and was known as the "Rutabagas King". He enjoyed telling humorous jokes, playing cards at the Welcome Matt and Ole's, fishing at the cabin in Chetek, deer hunting, gardening, wood working and watching westerns and game shows. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Eva; four children, Debra (Gary) Ottestad of Strum, Steven (Carol) Dorn of Prescott, Charlotte (Dan) Nelson of Muldrow, OK, and Karen (Bob) Porter of Eau Claire; three grandsons, Brian (Paula), Nathan and Blake Ottestad; two great-grandchildren, Madalyn and Colin Ottestad; sister, Evelyn Fugere; brother, Art (Joan) Dorn; plus many nieces, nephews and friends. Too Tall was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Robert Dorn; and nephew, Jon Dorn. Funeral services will be held at 6:30p.m. on Monday, April 15, 2013 at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, WEST CHAPEL, 1405 N. Clairemont Ave., in Eau Claire with Pastor Nathan Aaseng officiating. Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be held at a later date in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Eau Claire.
