Clarence Byron Flatland, 83, of Eau Claire, died Friday, October 18, 2002, at Luther Hospital. He was born on July 9, 1919 in the town of Sand Creek, the son of Charles and Gunda (Gubrud) Flatland. On September 20, 1941, he was united in marriage to Ethel Harmon at Sand Creek. \r\nHe served in the U.S. Army during World War II from May 1944 to November 1945, receiving the Purple Heart Medal for service in the European Theatre.\r\nHe was employed at Uniroyal Tire Company for 39 years until his retirement in 1981.\r\nClarence was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. He was a life member of VFW Post #305. \r\nHe enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and family get togethers. Clarence was a very loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.\r\nSurvivors include his wife, Ethel, of 61 years; two sons, Rodney (fiancée, Audrey Thomas) of Knapp and Charles of Eau Claire; two daughters, Judith (Allen) Johnson of Osseo and Debra (David) Sykora of Green Bay; seven grandchildren, Justin (Brenda) Flatland, Faron (Mary) Flatland, Tracy (Jeanne Skorstad) Johnson, Travis (Lori Larson) Johnson, Darek Sykora, Dustin (Holly) Sykora and Alisa (Casey Zimbauer) Johnson; ten great-grandchildren, Bill, Lisa, Logan, Brock, Tanner, Renee', Taylor, Dakota, Madyson and Kadynce; two brothers, Adrian of Lehigh Acres, FL and Darrell (Donna) of Eau Claire; and sister-in-law, Edna Flatland of Wheeler.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; son, Richard; five brothers, Wilbur, Gordon, Melvin, Rueben and infant Lenold; and four sisters, Gladys Weaver, Anna Wekkend, Lorraine Bechard and Ruby Flatland. \r\nFuneral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, October 21, 2002 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church with Pastor Gary F. Sahs officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery where VFW Post #305 will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call from 9 a.m. Monday until time of services at the church. Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home is serving the family.
