Clarence R. "Smitty" Smith, 93 passed away on Friday, May 10, 2013, in Eau Claire He was born November 20, 1919, in the Town of Union, to Fred and Barbara (Lakas) Smith. Clarence served in the army during World War II as a Warrant Officer, attaining the rank as Corporal. He traveled to many countries during the war including England, which is where he met his future wife, Freda Pearce. Upon returning to the United States they were married at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on October 12, 1946. Clarence worked for the Uniroyal Tire Company as a supervisor in the finishing department until he retired. After retirement he and Freda enjoyed traveling and visiting their children and grandchildren. He loved crossword puzzles and was an avid card player. He especially loved teaching his daughters and grandchildren how to play cribbage and win fair and square. Clarence also enjoyed volunteering at the Paul Bunyan Center and was a member of the Golden Kiwanis He is survived by his daughters, Jan (Bob) Costenaro of Weyerhauser, Barbara Smith of Woodbury, MN, and Michele (Michael) Hogan of Bradenton, FL; five grandchildren, Jason, Ryan, Christopher and Pearce Hogan, and Johna Costenaro; brother-in-law, Tom Reynolds of Atlanta, GA; many nieces, nephews and special friends. Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Freda; parents; brother, Jim; and sister, Fern. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church with Father John A.Schultz officiating. Entombment will be in the Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum in Eau Claire with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 53. Friends may call one hour prior to the mass at the church on Wednesday. Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
