Clarence "Clancy" J. Whelan, age 84, of Eau Claire passed away peacefully Sunday morning, October 7 at St. Paul Elder Care in Kaukauna, Wisconsin after a short illness. He was born August 9, 1928 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin to Declan and Gladys (Willis) Whelan. He graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1946 and entered the U.S. Army. After returning home from the military, he attended the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. In 1957 he married Loraine Hefty at St. Victor's Church in Monroe, Wisconsin. He was employed by Standard Oil/Amoco Oil Company for many years. He retired in 1985. Clarence was a faithful member of St. Patrick's/Sacred Heart Parish. He will be remembered as always a gentleman with a great sense of humor, a wonderful husband, father and grandpa who was proud of his Irish heritage, loved golf and faithfully followed Wisconsin Badger Football. Clarence is survived by his daughter, Joan (Kevin) Gostomski of Appleton; grandchildren, Alicia and Taylor Gostomski of Appleton; sisters-in-law, Anna Mae Gibbons of Monroe and Lucille Whelan of Eau Claire, and also by several nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Loraine; his parents, and brother, Declan Whelan. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred for the ministries of St. James Church, St. Patrick's/Sacred Heart Church or Mayo Clinic Health Systems. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 AM on Thursday, October 18, 2012, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11Th Street, Eau Claire, with Father John A. Schultz officiating along with Clarence's long time childhood friend Father Al Sonnberger. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Interment will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Eau Claire with Military Honors conducted by American Legion Post #53. To express condolences online, please visit obituaries at www.lenmarkfh.com.
