Obituary

Daniel Fremont Johnson, MD age 88 of Eau Claire passed away peacefully on Nov. 1 at River Pines Skilled Nursing Facility in Altoona under the care of Mayo Clinic Hospice. He was born on Oct. 12, 1936 to Martin and Carmen (Staley) Johnson in Chester, SD. He grew up on a farm outside Sioux Falls, SD, staying busy with 4-H, Boy Scouts, and piano lessons. He graduated from Washington High School in Sioux Falls in 1954. He then earned a bachelor's degree in medical sciences from University of South Dakota June 1958. That same year he married his high school sweetheart Carolyn Bodley and they would enjoy 62 years together until her death in 2020. Together they raised 4 children: Steven, Michael, Margaret, and Jeffrey. Dan went on to graduate from Washington University Medical School in St. Louis, MO 1961. After a one year internship at Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, he joined the U. S. Navy as a medical officer and proudly served from 1962 to 1964. He completed an OB-Gyn residency in Madison, WI from 1964 to 1968, then moved the family to Eau Claire to join the Midelfort Clinic. He went on to practice OB-Gyn medicine and surgery in Eau Claire, delivering over 3000 babies, until retirement in the 1990's. In retirement, Dan and Carolyn enjoyed spending time with family, travel, winters in Marco Island, FL, and summers in Breckenridge, CO. Dan and Carolyn were people of strong faith and Christian service, first as members of Chapel Heights United Methodist Church, and then as charter members of Hope United Methodist Church. "Giving back" was always their priority, benefitting their church and many community organizations. Dan will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Carmen; his beloved wife, Carolyn; brother, T. R.; niece, Sharon Bodley-Huppertz; and brother-in-law, John Thatcher. He is survived by his children, Steven (Brenda), Mike (Karen), Margaret (Michael) Sullivan, Jeff (Connie); grandchildren, Emily (Tyler) Johnson-Barlow, Andrew (Emily) Johnson, Kyle Johnson, Sean Johnson, Ryan (Emily) Johnson, John Michael (Amy) Sullivan, Katherine (Andrew) Sullivan, Meghan Sullivan, and Jeremy Johnson; great grandchildren, Carson Johnson and Maeve Barlow; sisters-in-law, Margaret Thatcher, Elaine Johnson and Jan Bodley; brother-in-law, Daniel Bodley. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the staff of River Pines Skilled Nursing Facility and Mayo Clinic Hospice for their compassionate care of Dan. Memorial services will be held at 11AM Saturday, November 9, 2024 at Hope United Methodist Church, 2233 Golf Rd., Eau Claire with Pastor Jennifer Barnet officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be at Lakeview Cemetery Columbarium with military honors performed by VFW Post 305..
