Obituary

DeLoyd E. Stertz, 87, of Altoona, WI, died suddenly on Monday, April 20, 2015, while riding his bike in Mississippi. He was born in Junction City, WI, on May 7, 1927, a son of George and Clara (Wayerski) Stertz. DeLoyd served in the U.S. Navy as Seaman First Class before attending UW-Stevens Point where he earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He went on to the University of Minnesota where he earned a Master's Degree in Mathematics. DeLoyd taught in Lena, WI, and served as Principal on Washington Island and in Gillett, WI. DeLoyd then taught in the Mathematics Department at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire for 33 years before retiring in 1987. DeLoyd married Arlyn M. Kalms on June 11, 1958, in Institute, WI. DeLoyd loved traveling, biking, golfing and eating breakfast out and was an avid Packer fan. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Emma and Sam Stertz. DeLoyd is survived by his wife, Arlyn; son, Craig (Theresa) Stertz of Grand Rapids, MN; two grandchildren; brother, George Stertz of Eagan, MN; sister, LaNore Ziolkowski of Neenah, WI; and by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, LeRoy Stertz. Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 Noon on Friday, May 8, 2015, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1812 Lynn Ave. Altoona, with Father Derek Sakowski officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Inurnment will be in the Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum in Calvary Cemetery, Eau Claire.
