Obituary

DR. DONALD J. ALM, 76, of 1705 Coolidge Court, died Friday, February 5, 1999 at the Clairemont, after a lengthy illness. Donald John Alm was born in Milbank, South Dakota on March 22, 1922, the son of Emil and Edna (Schiefelbein) Alm. His family moved to Eau Claire in 1929. He attended college in Eau Claire and received his DDS degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1950 after serving in the US Army in WW II. He married Jane Ireland, from Milwaukee, on July 22, 1950.\r\nHe enlisted in the Army on September 24, 1942 and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. During the next three years he served in many of the major campaigns in North Africa and Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in Sicily. \r\nDr. Alm maintained a dental practice in Eau Claire from 1950 until his retirement in January 1998. In addition to his dental practice, Dr. Alm served as a deacon of his church. He was an avid sportsman who engaged in skiing, hunting and fishing. His interests also included amateur ham radio and most recently, a personal computers enthusiast.\r\nHe is survived by his wife, Jane; four children, Kathryn (Chester) Sielski of Clarence, NY, Steven (Holly) of Appleton, David (Chris) of Flower Mound, TX, and Elisabeth (Felix) Alm-Sanchez of Matawan, NJ; seven grandchildren, Andrew and Ted Sielski, Alex and Alison Klemme, Isabella and Nicolas Sanchez, and Thomas Alm; a sister, Elaine (Winston) Hagen of Excelsior, MN; and a brother, Lowell Duane "Pat" (Nancy) Alm of Wyandotte, MI.\r\nHis parents preceded him in death.\r\nFuneral Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chapel Heights United Methodist Church with Pastor Thomas A. Lambrecht officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Friends may call 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lenmark-Gomsrud Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church. \r\nFamily requests memorials be directed to Chapel Heights United Methodist Church or charity of the donor's choice.
