Obituary

DONALD ANTHONY MERCIER, 76, of 3646 Damon St., Eau Claire passed away Tuesday, November 10, 1998 at Luther Hospital. He was born February 1, 1922 in Rice Lake to Fred and Laura (Amans) Mercier. \r\nDon served six months in the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to enlisting in the Army. He served thirty-eight months, seeing action in the South-Pacific Theater of Operations in World War II as a member of the 44th Tank Battalion. \r\nDon married Dorothy Koch on February 13, 1947 in Rice Lake. He graduated from the University of WI, Madison in 1950 with a B.B.A. degree. He retired in February, 1985 after thirty-one years at the Pope&Talbot Paper Mill, the last fifteen years as Operations Controller. During his years of work and retirement he was active in community affairs serving on the boards for Junior Achievement, American Red Cross, Public Affairs Council of Eau Claire County, American Association of Retired Persons - Chapter 4340, the 44th Tank Battalion Association and the 12th Armored Division Association. He was the first Certified Director of Duplicate Bridge in the Eau Claire area and promoted the game of bridge in the Chippewa Valley for many years.\r\nDon wrote many letters to the editor and to government officials at all levels to promote better government. He was an avid cross-country skier. In recent years he has been very active in promoting and preserving the history of the military units he served with.\r\nHe is survived by his wife Dorothy; a son Gary (Arlene Louton) of Balsam Lake; a daughter Diane (Harley) Moe Mercier, and a granddaughter, Andrea Moe both of Reno, NV; a brother, Stanley (Esther) Mercier of Rice Lake; two sisters, Lu Davis of St. Paul and Lorraine Hammer of Madison; and a sister-in-law, Elsie Zdenek of Eau Claire.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Glen.\r\nMemorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, at Lenmark-Gomsrud Funeral Home with interment in Rest Haven Gardens Cemetery in the town of Wahington. Donald's family will receive friends an hour prior to services at the funeral home. .In lieu of flowers, family requests memorials be directed to Luther Hospital.
