Doris M. Opsal, 84, of Menomonie and formerly of Eau Claire, died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at American Lutheran Home in Menomonie.\r\nShe was born on September 9, 1924 in Menomonie, Dunn County to Oscar and Ella (Engen) Hammer. She attended Evergreen Valley Country School and graduated from Menomonie High School in 1942. \r\nDoris married Charles E. Opsal in Menomonie on May 6, 1947. They moved to Eau Claire in 1961.\r\nShe worked at the defense plant in Eau Claire for one year and then was employed as a telephone operator for Wisconsin Telephone Company for 37 years, retiring in 1983.\r\nShe was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Telephone Pioneers.\r\nDoris is survived by her daughter, Cindy (Joann Steinmeyer) Opsal of Menomonie; two sons, Lyle (Linda Larson) Opsal and Steven (Carol) Opsal both of Eau Claire; three grandchildren, Amy (Tom) Lillevold, Christen and Ryan Opsal; two great grandsons, Weston Schlewitz and Aden Lillevold; two step-grandchildren, Andrew and Anthony Schieffer; five step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.\r\nShe was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles in 2007; two brothers, Clarence and Eugene Hammer; and two sisters, Edna Neubauer and Shirley Ziehl. \r\nMemorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 21, 2009, at First Lutheran Church in Eau Claire with Pastor Scott Miller officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. \r\nFamily requests memorials be directed to First Lutheran Church, 1005 Oxford Ave., Eau Claire, WI, 54703
