Obituary

Dorothy M. Kohnke, 93, of Area Nursing Home,Colfax and formerly of Elk Mound, died Friday, September 19, 1997 at Community Memorial Hospital in Bloomer. She was born December 21, 1903 in Augusta to Fred and Lucy (Doherty)Horel. She grew up in Augusta and graduated from high school there.\r\nOn June 9, 1927, Dorothy married Ewald Kohnke in Winona,MN. She received her teaching degree from Eau Claire Normal School in 1923. She first taught in Zap,ND, the rural Elk Mound schools and then in the Eau Claire Public Schools until her retirement from Cleghorn Elementary in 1966. \r\nDorothy served on the Elk Mound School Board and was a member the Dunn County Homemakers, the Sunshine Club, a leader in the Fosbrooke 4 H Club and Barum Lutheran Church where she served in many capacities over the years.\r\nSurvivors include a son, Ronald of Elk Mound; a daughter, Delores (Marlowe) Sperstad of Tempe, AZ; six grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; three half brothers, Schuyler Horel of Rudyard,MT, Marvin Horel of Tucson,AZ, and Bob Horel of Boise,ID; a half sister, Bonnie Een of Boise,ID; many nieces and nephews.\r\nShe was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Gordon and Stanley Horel; a grandson, Robert Kohnke; and a daughter-in-law, Donna Kohnke.\r\nThe family requests memorials be directed to the Barum Lutheran Sunday School Fund.
