Obituary
Dorothy A. Smith, 96, of Eau Claire, passed away on Friday, August 14, 2015, at the Clairemont Nursing and Rehab in Eau Claire. She was born on December 19, 1918, in Eau Claire, to John and Anna Marie (Olson) Oien, where she lived her whole life. She attended Eau Claire High School and graduated with the class of 1936. On August 2, 1941, Dorothy married William H. Smith in Stillwater, MN. She entered nursing school at Luther Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in 1940. She worked at Sacred Heart Hospital on Dewy Street and Luther Hospital in the maternity ward during World War II. She also did first aid nursing at Uniroyal while the plant was making ammunitions and continued working there as needed until 1960. Dorothy then returned to Luther Hospital, joined Midelfort Clinic and retired in 1978. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and enjoyed participating in all the world service activities. She also loved watching baseball and attending games of the Milwaukee Braves, Milwaukee Brewers and the Eau Claire Express. On her travels to Florida, she even went to some spring training games of the Minnesota Twins. Dorothy was also especially proud of her Norwegian heritage. Dorothy is survived by her son, David (Karene) Smith; daughter, Mary (David) Wing; four grandchildren, Michael Smith, Cole (Kellie) Wing, Traci (Rick) Zuzelski and Tiffiany (Jeff) Sundblad; and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill in 1986; and brothers, Joseph, Elmer and Arthur Oien. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Eau Claire Humane Society, 3900 Old Town Hall Rd., Eau Claire, WI 54701. Funeral Services will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, August 17, 2015, at Saving Grace Lutheran Church, 2124 Eastridge Center in Eau Claire, with Pastor Rolf A. Nestingen officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service on Monday at the church. Burial will be at Forest Hill Cemetery in Eau Claire.
