Obituary

Dorothy was born in 1924, in Brooklyn, New York. As an infant she traveled for 1 month across the Atlantic Ocean to Southern Africa. It was in Southern Rhodesia where she was raised on a mission station. Her dad was the preacher, and her mom taught. Dorothy played with the African children on the mission and learned their language of "Chiminiqua".

Dorothy had Governess, who taught her until she was old enough to ride her bike to school. Dorothy studied to become an RN, but there was very little college training. Her training was on-the-job-learning, in the hospital. She rode her bike to and from the hospital, that was her only mode of transportation.

Dorothy met John at church on the mission, as John was visiting as a WW2 Army officer. He was invited to the pastors, mom's parents, house for lunch and this is when they fell for one another. In 1948, Dorothy and John were married, and they ran a florist business. They had their first child while in Africa. Shortly after he was born, John decided to go into the ministry, so they relocated to Ohio, USA for John to attend the University to study. Dorothy also continued her education, studying for the US nursing boards. Dorothy and John were married for 72 years.

Dorothy became a nurse and John an ordained pastor. Their first appointment was in Southern Wisconsin, which is what brought them to Wisconsin. Many churches considered themselves lucky to get "two for one," as Dorothy was by John's side every step of his ministry.

Dorothy is survived by: son, Ray (Karen); son-in-law, Craig Gibson; son, David and daughter, Joanne (Dan) Wilson. Grandchildren: Mark Mullen, Anwen Mullen, Dennis (Briana) Bauer, Dinah Katthoff, Josh (Kim) Gibson, Annie Gibson, Lucas (Jamie) Wilson and Jacob (Eva) Wilson. Dorothy loved her 11 great grandchildren.

Dorothy was proceeded in death by her: parents; siblings; husband, John; daughter, Winnie Gibson; daughter-in-law, Pam Wreford and grandson, Paul Mullen.

Dorothy lived in Menomonie at Comforts of Home, where she had excellent care and love by the staff there. Her hobbies included sewing, cooking, gardening, swimming, golfing and cycling. Christian faith has been important for Dorothy and her service in Christ was apparent in her life.

The family wants to thank St. Croix Hospice for their loving care, the amazing team at Comforts of Home, and her special friend Danielle Mensing.

Memorial Services will be held on Tuesday, June 2, at 11:00 a.m., at United Methodist Church, 2703 Bongey Drive, Menomonie, WI with lunch to follow. A private burial will be held at a later date.
