Obituary

Dwight William "Wes" Westermann of Eau Claire, Wisconsin (and formerly of Burnsville, MN) passed away from a stroke on June 30, 2017 at Sacred Heart Hospital. He was 74. Dwight was born in Watertown, Minnesota on June 30, 1943, to Alfons and Luella (Harthun) Westermann. He grew up on the family farm in Young America, Minnesota, and attended St. John's Lutheran School and graduated from Central High School in Norwood-Young America in 1961. He served in the US Air Force from 1961-1965, stationed in Oregon and France. He earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business from the University of Minnesota in 1969. Dwight married Dorothy Plessel in January of 1964. He worked for Minnesota Fire while living in Northeast Minneapolis in the late 1960s. He worked as a salesman for Caterpillar/Nagle Hart selling heavy equipment in Wisconsin from 1969 – 1982 while living in Sussex, Kewaskum, and later Poplar, Wisconsin. He later started his own businesses, ranging from wood-chipping, selling hearses and limousines while living in Burnsville, MN, and ultimately establishing Westermann Supply, based in Eau Claire, which kept him busy in the conveyer and aggregate equipment industry until his retirement in 2008. He had a great curiosity and enjoyed the intellectual challenge of learning the details of each new business. Even more, he enjoyed the people he met through his work, and he always had a knack for quickly turning strangers into customers, and for turning customers into friends. Dwight had hundreds of lifelong friends, and shared his many hobbies and interests with them, whether it was fishing, playing cards, dancing to "oompa music", shooting trap, or just telling jokes and drinking "barley pop". Dwight was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 53 years, son Damian (Julie) Westermann of Superior, WI, and daughters Dawn Westermann of Shoreview, MN and Deanne (Mark) Silvera of Centerville, MN, and grandchildren Nate, Nikki, and Nic Westermann, and Natalie and Henry Silvera. He is also survived by his sister Karen (Robert) Andrus and brother Keith Westermann, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and many friends, from all the places he's lived and worked throughout his life. Visitation will be held Wednesday July 5, from 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm, with prayer service at 8:30 pm at Lenmark Gomsrud Linn Funeral Home West Chapel, located at 1405 W Clairemont Ave, Eau Claire.
