Obituary

Edward J. Thompson, 82, of Eau Claire died Thursday, February 13, 2014, at Dove Healthcare-West in Eau Claire. Edward was born in Eau Claire on June 22, 1931, a son of George and Ellen (Hurley) Thompson. He attended St. Patrick's grade school. In February of 1953, Edward started working on the Chicago Northwestern Railroad. Later the same year, he was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he served until 1955. Upon his discharge from the Army, Edward went back to work at the railroad until his retirement in 1991, after 38 years of service. On October 4, 1958, Edward married Rosanna Buntz at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. In the fall of 2013, Edward and Rosanna celebrated their 55th Wedding Anniversary. Edward was a member of St. James the Greater Catholic Church, American Legion Post #53, Chippewa Valley Motor Car Association in Durand, United Transportation Union, Union Pacific Railroad Employees Club, and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge #1408. Edward enjoyed helping people and was always available to fix just about anything for anybody. He also enjoyed having cookouts at Lake Wissota with family and friends. Edward is survived by his wife of 55 years, Rosanna; a sister, Mary (Bruce) Parker of Eau Claire; brother-in-law, Ronald (Judy) Buntz of Chippewa Falls; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, William and George Thompson; and two sisters, Ellen Sanders and Lucy Hobbs. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, February 18, 2014, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th St. in Eau Claire, with Father John A. Schultz officiating. Visitation will be on Monday, February 17, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a Prayer Vigil at 6:30 p.m. at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home-WEST CHAPEL, 1405 N. Clairemont Ave. in Eau Claire and also one hour prior to the Mass Tuesday at the church. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery with military honors conducted by the American Legion Post 53 at the cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff at Dove Healthcare-West and Mayo Home, Health & Hospice for their expertise care and comfort for Edward.
