Obituary

Eilert "Cy" G. Berg, 84, of Eau Claire, died Wednesday, October 31, 2007, at Luther Hospital. He was born in Eau Claire on June 24, 1923, the son of Hjalmer and Helen (Johnson) Berg. \r\nCy married his wife of 57 years, Gloria R. Behnke on November 23, 1950, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. \r\nHe served in China with the 8th motor transport battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, and was based at Camp LeJeune, NC, during the Korean Conflict. He received his honorable discharge in 1952.\r\nCy graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School with the class of 1941. He received his teaching degree at Eau Claire Teachers College, and earned his masters in guidance and counseling from UW-Stout. He was first and foremost a teacher beginning his teaching career at Eau Claire Senior High. He coached football and baseball at both Memorial and North High Schools. Cy was an administrator at Memorial High School when he retired in 1982.\r\nCy was involved in almost every aspect of sports that Eau Claire had to offer, from the Eau Claire Rockets, American Legion Baseball, Old Abe state baseball and football championships, broadcasting the national ski jumping tournaments, and others too numerous to mention. He was inducted, as a charter member, into the Old Abe Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005.\r\nHe was a lifetime member of First Lutheran Church in Eau Claire where he was baptized and confirmed. He was a life member of American Legion Post #53 and VFW Post #305 in Eau Claire.\r\nCy is survived by his wife Gloria; two sons; Eilert "Ike" (Brenda) Berg of Crystal Lake, IL, and their children, Kyle, Karissa, and Tarah; John (Marilyn) Berg of Chippewa Falls and their children, Holly, David, Zachery and Heidi; three daughters, Susan (Ed) Jakober of Colfax and their children, Karl, Kevin and Glen; Katherine of Los Angles; and Janet (Bob) Brumblay of Wahiawa, Hawaii and their children, Jackson, Cameron and Hunter; two sisters, Marcy Novacek of Eau Claire and Ardis (Leonard) Erickson of Madison; brother-in law Bill Behnke of Atlanta; sisters-in-law, Gladys Berg of Milwaukee and Alice Smiskey of Eau Claire; and nieces and nephews.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lyman Berg; sister-in law Elaine Wrigglesworth; and brothers-in-law Jim Novacek and Wayne Behnke.\r\nFuneral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 5, 2007, at First Lutheran Church with Pastor Amy Odgren officiating. Burial will be in Lutheran Church Cemetery in Eau Claire where American Legion Post #53 will conduct military graveside honors.
