Obituary

Eleanor Anna Lutz, 91, died Sunday, May 20th, 2007 at Dove Healthcare in Eau Claire.\r\nBorn October 6, 1915 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Eleanor was the daughter of Edward and Anna (Eckstrom) Chalgren, both children of Swedish immigrants.\r\nEleanor attended Salem Covenant Church. After Edison High School, she attended and graduated, cum laude, from the University of Minnesota at age 19 in 1935, and worked as a hospital dietician in Minneapolis. Throughout her life she took an interest in health and nutrition issues.\r\nEleanor married Reverend Elliott D. Marston (founding pastor of Church of St. Stephen the Martyr (Episcopal) in Edina, MN in 1940. After visiting a parishioner with the disease, Elliott contracted and died suddenly from polio in 1946, leaving Eleanor with 3 young children, Elliott, Daniel, and Sarah.\r\nShe married Howard T. Lutz in 1951, whom she and Elliott had met through the Fellowship of Reconciliation. The family settled in Northfield where Howard taught at St. Olaf College and Jonathan was born. In 1957 Howard accepted a position at UWEC and Eau Claire became their home. They divorced in 1984.\r\nArticulate and well-read, she took great interest in a wide range of organizations and causes, including the League of Women Voters, the Fellowship of Reconciliation, Natural Resources Defense Council, Scandinavian associations, and public radio. An Episcopalian, Eleanor was also involved with Quakers and deeply committed to work for peace, justice, and understanding. She was well-traveled, spoke Swedish, and welcomed many visitors of various cultural backgrounds to her home. Eleanor loved playing the piano and accompanying singing, and sang in church choirs.\r\nSurvived by brother, Col. Edward Chalgren, sisters Ione Martin and Janet Hoag; children Elliott Marston (Katie Simonson) Edina, MN, Daniel (Beate) Marston, Basel, Switzerland, Sarah Gabbert, Alexandria, VA, and Jonathan (Ylva) Lutz Ekené
