Obituary

Elizabeth "Betty" J. Holey, 87, of Eau Claire, WI and formerly of West Salem died Monday, November 24, 2008, at Sacred Heart Hospital. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 31, 1920, a daughter of James and Ethel (Coleman) Steele. \r\nShe grew up in the Missouri Ozarks, graduated from the University of Missouri and interned in Dietetics at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.\r\nIn February of 1943, Betty was commissioned as a Lieutenant into the United States Army and served in hospitals in Camp Hood Texas, Paris, France and Nurnberg, Germany. In 1946, she returned to civilian life and served as Dietitian at Battlecreek Sanitarium in Miami, Florida, Orange County Memorial Hospital in Orlando, Florida, and Duke University Hospital, Durham, North Carolina.\r\nStarting in 1949, Betty attended the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill taking classes in creative and radio writing for one year and in 1952 she received her Master's degree in Public Health Nutrition.\r\nBetty married James M. Holey in August of 1952. They worked for the West Virginia State Health Department for two years. In 1954, Jim and Betty moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota where Betty worked for the St. Paul Health Department. After leaving her work for several years to be a homemaker, she eventually returned to work as Nutritionist with the Minneapolis Health Department for the next 21 years.\r\nBoth Jim and Betty retired in 1986 and moved to his family home in West Salem, Wisconsin where they lived for 18 happy years. While in West Salem, Betty was active in Church work, serving four years as President of the Southeast Wisconsin Synod Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. She was also active in Church Women United, Hospice Care, and served on a Transitional Housing Committee that assisted victims of domestic violence. In addition, she was an active part of a writing class for more than 10 years and enjoyed writing stories as well as letters to her family and many dear friends.\r\nUpon the death of her beloved Jim in 2004, she moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin to be close to her family. She was an active resident at Oakwood Hills Senior Apartments and had many wonderful friends living around her and visiting her. She loved seeing her grandchildren growing up and joining them in weekly family dinners. She was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Eau Claire.\r\nBetty is survived by her two sons, Eric (Roxanne) Holey of Eau Claire and James "Andy" (Gary Whitford) Holey of St. Cloud, MN; three grandchildren, Anna Li Holey, Eric Boelter and Matthew Boelter; and a brother, David Steele of Florida.\r\nShe was preceded in death by her husband, James M. Holey in 2004; her parents; and a brother, James Steele.\r\nMemorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, November 29, 2008, at Hope Lutheran Church in Eau Claire with Pastor Randy Olson officiating. Burial will be in Neshonoc Cemetery in the town of Hamilton near West Salem, WI. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.
