Obituary

Esther Moen, age 88, of Hayward passed away on February 5, 2003 at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire after a long and courageous battle with Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Esther was born July 19, 1914 in Mellette, SD, the daughter of Samuel and Olga (Lau) Jackson. The family moved to the Meridean area when Esther was a child. She was baptized and confirmed at the Meridean Lutheran Church. Esther married Clarence Moen on June 22, 1940 at Rock Creek Lutheran Church. They lived in Eau Claire until Clarence joined the Marine Corp during WWII and was stationed in San Diego, CA. Esther joined him and remained in San Diego, working for the US Postal Service while he was overseas. At the end of the war, they returned to Eau Claire. Many of the friends that she made there still kept in touch with her. Clarence worked at Uniroyal and Esther worked at Kresge's, Montgomery Ward, and Presto Industries. They were active members of First Lutheran Church when they lived in Eau Claire. She and Clarence loved to fish; Esther was always very proud of her trophy musky at the Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward. When they retired in 1972, they moved to the Hayward area where they became members of First Lutheran Church in Hayward. Sadly, Clarence lived only three years to enjoy retirement at their lake home. Later in life, she began oil painting, and enjoyed this hobby along with fishing and walking two miles a day with her special friend, Betty. Esther remained active, loved living near the lake and enjoyed all her friends in the Hayward area. Survivors include her sister, Viola (Leslie) Broberg and sister-in-law Judith Jackson both of Rock Falls; special nieces and nephews, Sharon (Henry) Schank of Altoona, Dean (Penny) Broberg of Blaine, MN, Jane (PeeWee) Shager, Linda (Charles) Harschlip both of Rock Falls, Karen (Fred) Seyforth, Carmen (Lenny) Odegard both of Mondovi, Dennis (Sandy) Jackson of Onalaska; great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence in 1975; her parents; brothers, Albert and George Jackson; sister-in-law Inga Jackson; and nephew, Roger Jackson. A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 8, 2003 at First Lutheran Church in Eau Claire with Rev. Carl F. Bruihler, Jr of First Lutheran Church of Hayward officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire. Family and friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church.
