Ethel Irene Flatland, 92, of Eau Claire, passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Eau Claire Hospital. Ethel was born on September 17, 1921, in Dunn County, to Grant and Anna (Glaser) Harmon. On September 20, 1941, Ethel was united in marriage to Clarence Byron Flatland in Sand Creek. After she raised five children, Ethel worked at Luther Hospital as a ward secretary in the OB Department until her retirement. She enjoyed hunting, fishing, reminiscing about life and spending time with her family. Ethel had a wonderful skill for cooking and baking, despite her loss of taste and smell. She also had a knack for making anyone and everyone feel welcome in her home when they came to visit. Ethel is survived by her two sons, Rodney (Audrey) Flatland of Knapp and Charles Flatland of Eau Claire; two daughters, Judith (Allen) Johnson of Osseo and Debra (David) Sykora of Green Bay; seven grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren; brother, Roy Harmon; and also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Richard Byron; six siblings, Hazel, Richard, Raymond, Arlys, Marie and Janet. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m., on Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Lakeview Cemetery, off of Cameron St., in Eau Claire.
