Eugene D. Burr, 74, of 510 Wagner Ave. died Friday, May 10, 2002 at Luther Hospital after a lengthy illness. Eugene was born on November 7, 1927 in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, the son of Howard and Esther (Anderson) Burr. He attended Longfellow Elementary, Central Junior High and Eau Claire Senior High School. \r\nHe joined the Merchant Marines when he was 16 years old and received his training at Sheep's Head Bay Training School in New York City. With the Merchant Marines he traveled along the shores of the Pacific Northwest.\r\nIn World War II, Eugene served in the U.S. Navy as a 3rd class motor machinist on a LST270 ship. He also served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant in the Tank Company 351st Infantry at Trieste in the European Theatre. He told the story of how he once shook hands with General George Patton during an inspection of U.S. Troops in Europe.\r\nEugene married Jean Miner on March 17, 1955 in Bloomer. They lived in Eau Claire where he was employed 33 years at Uniroyal-Goodrich, working in various departments until his retirement in 1982.\r\nHe was a lifetime member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Chippewa Valley Aerie #213 and VFW Post #305\r\nSurvivors include two daughters, Sandra Ming and Susan Burr; son, Howard (Shirley) Burr; five grandchildren, Nicole and Natasha Ming, Sabrina, Justin and Rachel Burr; a great-grandson, Darian Moss; brother, Wilton Burr all of Eau Claire; two brothers-in-law, Richard (Jeanette) Miner and Warren "Bud" Miner of Superior; and many nieces and nephews.\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Jean in 1999; two sons, Jack and Terry; a daughter Debra; and two brothers, Sherwin and Floyd "Blackie" Burr.\r\nEugene enjoyed fishing with his wife, kids and brothers-in-law, and spending time "up north" at his cabin with his grandchildren. He will be missed and remembered by his family and friends for his humor and way of nicknaming everyone.\r\nFuneral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, 2002 at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home with Pastor Rolf Nestingen officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery where VFW Post 305 will conduct military graveside rites. Friends may call 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and an hour prior to services on Tuesday.
