Eunice M. Shafer, 79, of Eau Claire, passed away at her home on Sunday, October 11, 2015, surrounded by her family after a courageous fight with cancer. She was born on September 21, 1936, in Eau Claire to Ervin and Cora (Jenson) Sokup. She attended Regis High School and graduated with the Class of 1954. On October 22, 1955, Eunice married Glen "Spike" Shafer, at St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Eau Claire. She was an active member of the parish for 60 years. Eunice worked as a dental assistant and receptionist for many years before retiring. She also volunteered at St. James after retirement. Her passions included dancing, traveling, spending winters in the south, playing BINGO, doing water aerobics at the YMCA, watching the Badgers and Packers and cheering on her children in all their sporting endeavors. Our mom was a very kind and devoted person who took care of her husband and cherished the time spent with family, especially her grandchildren. Eunice is survived by her four children, Steven (Linda) Shafer, Sandra (Bill) Cleaver, David (Wanda) Shafer and Paul (Kathleen) Shafer; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Heather), Kevin and Nick Shafer, Matthew Cleaver, Seth and Alexis Shafer, and Owen and Malia Shafer; two great-grandchildren, Grace and Shelby Shafer; two sisters, Susan (Zeno) Waterman and Cindy (Joe) Slaby; four brothers, Dick (Joan) Sokup, Don Sokup, Jim (Lori) Sokup and Bob Sokup (Nancy); and also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 58 years, Glen in 2014; brother, Bill Sokup; and infant sister, Barbara Sokup. The family would like to thank Eunice's healthcare workers Hayley Lane, Shelby Prince, Lisa Garcia Kircher, Heather Larscheid and Jade Effertz for all the love and care given to her over the last few months; and also Mayo Clinic Home Health and Hospice for their support. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2015, at St James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th St. with Father Tom Krieg officiating. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Entombment will be in the Resurrection Mausoleum in Calvary Cemetery in Eau Claire.
