Obituary

EVELYN A. MATHEWS, 85, formerly of Crescent Ave.,Eau Claire, died Friday, January 31, 1996 at Buffalo Memorial Nursing Home in Mondovi where she resided the past 6 years. She was born in Eau Claire on March 12, 1911 to William David and Elsie (Strobel) McSorley. On March 22, 1929, Evelyn married Basil "Shorty" Mathews in Stillwater,MN.\r\nAfter raising her children, Evelyn worked a number of years as a nurses aid at Sacred Heart Hospital. She was bookkeeper at Mathews Sheet Metal which she and Shorty owned and operated. Following their retirement she was a bookkeeper at Kleen-Aire Corp.\r\nAs a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ, she had been active in Women's Fellowship. She had served as a volunteer with the Mt. Washington Auxiliary.\r\nSurvivors include a son, Vaughn (Loraine), Eau Claire; two daughters, Dorothy (Richard) Bellesbach, Eau Claire and Sherry Slininger, Hudson; 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, William "David" (Shirley) McSorley, Eau Claire; 3 sisters, Elsie Dahl, Eau Claire and Leona Johnson and Louise Tarbox both of Chippewa Falls; and many nieces and nephews.\r\nShe was preceded in death by her husband in 1985; and son-in-law, Robert Slininger.\r\nEvelyn's children will remember her thoughtfulness and how helpful she was with others.\r\nFuneral services will be 1:30 P.M. Tuesday at First Congregational United Church of Christ with Pastor Derril Peabody officiating. Burial will be in Rest Haven Gardens Cemetery, Town of Washington. Friends may call 4 to 7 P.M. Monday at Lenmark-Gomsrud Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
