Obituary

Frances Demmler Converse, 83, died on Sunday, October 12, 1997 at her home. She was born on October 15, 1913 in Eau Claire to Walter and Frances (Lees) Demmler. She was raised in Eau Claire and earned her Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1935. She started her teaching career as a primary school teacher at Boyd School. Frances married Ronald J. Converse on May 28, 1939 in Phoenix,Arizona. They returned to Eau Claire to raise a family. In 1958, she resumed her teaching career, investing the next 26 years teaching English at Central and DeLong Junior High Schools. She was acknowledged by many of her former students as being one of those educators that had a true impact on their lives.\r\nDuring the 1950's, Frances was active in many charities including the Visiting Nurse's Association and the American Cancer Society. She was a long time member of the Junior League and the Eau Claire Women's Club. After retiring, she and Ronald took classes at the University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire for several years. She traveled widely and enjoyed reading and bridge.\r\nSurvivors include two sons, James Harris II (Patricia) of Elgin,IL, and David Demmler of Huron,S.D.; a daughter, Amy Converse (Mark) Hunter of Boulder,CO; and two grandsons, James Harris III and Chase Alexander.\r\nA private graveside service will be held Saturday morning. An open house will be held at the family home, 435 Jefferson Street, from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday afternoon.\r\nThe family prefers memorials to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.\r\n
