Freeberg, 89, of Eau Claire, died on Wednesday,\r\nAugust 24, 2011.\r\n\r\nGarf was born on October 26, 1921 in Running Valley, rural\r\nColfax, to Olga (Hilson) and Hilmer Freeberg. He attended grammar school in Eau\r\nClaire County and graduated from Granton (WI) High School in 1941.\r\n\r\nFollowing graduation he enlisted in the Marine Corps, WWII\r\nand was stationed in the South Pacific.\r\n\r\nHe married Shirley Kayser in Granton on November 21, 1945,\r\nand they celebrated their 65th anniversary in 2011.\r\n\r\nDuring his lifetime he was never unemployed and had many\r\njobs, the major ones being a truck driver for Chippewa Motor Freight and Berg\r\nTransfer, and as a driver for Greyhound Bus. In 1952, he began work as a claims\r\nadjuster for Secura Insurance (then Home Mutual Insurance Company). \r\n\r\nVacations with his family, three daughters, grandson, and\r\nfriends were happily spent boating and water skiing. He also supported his\r\ngirls in horse showing and announced many horse shows.\r\n\r\nAfter the family grew up and scattered he continued wood working.\r\nFollowing retirement he did free-lance claims adjusting and owned a saw mill,\r\ndoing custom sawing. \r\n\r\nThere were many trips by car, a couple of cruises, but\r\nGarf's favorites were a trip to Scandinavia, a three month stay on the shores\r\nof the Sea of Cortez in Sonora, Mexico, a three month stay in Rexburg, Idaho,\r\nand a seven week driving trip from Mesa, AZ to Alaska, including a return on\r\nthe ferry from Skagway, AK to Bellingham, WA.\r\n\r\nGarf and Shirley moved to Mesa, AZ in 1995 and golf was king\r\nfor Garf for 10 years, with two hole-in-ones. They sold their home in Mesa and\r\nreturned to Eau Claire in 2005.\r\n\r\nHe was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Eau\r\nClaire, and a treasured time was the "small group" Bible studies with the\r\nLuttrells, Cliffs, Petersons, Brumbergs, and Rassbachs. For the ten years in\r\nMesa, Garf and Shirley's church home was Our Savior's Lutheran Church.\r\n\r\nGarf was a member of the Sons of Norway for 38 years and a\r\nmember of the old Trail Riders Club.\r\n\r\nOn the way to Alaska they stayed in a B&B in British\r\nColumbia. While visiting with the owners the hostess would say "Whatta Guy"\r\nafter Garf's comments. This was repeated often! And to sum him up, we say "Whatta\r\nGuy!"\r\n\r\nHis Epitaph: He loved the Lord.\r\n\r\nGarf is survived by his wife, Shirley; three daughters,\r\nKaren Freeberg of Tucson, AZ, Vanna Freeberg of Mendocino, CA, and Mary\r\nFreeberg (David) Graziano; grandson, Josiah Baker; brother, Charles (Betty);\r\nsisters-in-law, Miriam Freeberg and Eunice Freeberg; and many nieces and\r\nnephews.\r\n\r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents, Olga and Hilmer\r\nFreeberg; brothers, Marvin, Harlyn (Maxine), Robert (Jean) and Daniel; mother\r\nand father - in-law, Clara and Van Kayser; brother-in-law, Allan (Jane) Kayser;\r\nand nephew, Jeff Kayser.\r\n\r\nFuneral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 31,\r\n2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1314 E. Lexington Blvd. Eau Claire with Pastor\r\nJim Page officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday,\r\nAugust 30, 2011 at Lenmark Gomsrud Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Ave. and one\r\nhour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. The family will have a\r\nprivate committal service at Faith Lutheran Church Cemetery in Running Valley,\r\nrural Colfax.
