Gary E. Champion, 78, of Eau Claire, passed away on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at Grace Woodlands in Eau Claire. Gary was born in Eau Claire on March 15, 1940, a son of Philo and Eleanor (Hilsgen) Champion. He married Yvonne M. Bushendorf on February 7, 1959, in Eau Claire. Gary served in the U.S. Air Force from February 1, 1959, until his honorable discharge on April 30, 1979. He then worked for the Department of Defense until his retirement in 1994. He was a member of Non-Commissioned Officers Administration, Air Force Association and Truax Congregation United Church of Christ. Gary is survived by his wife, Yvonne; two sons, Gregory (Jonelle Wittman) Champion and Kevin (Kristina) Champion, both of Eau Claire; four grandchildren, Christopher, Nicolas (Becca), Joshua and Justin Champion; two great grandchildren, Caleb and Piper; two brothers, Russell (Annette) Champion of Chippewa Falls and Steven (Nancy) Champion of Eau Claire. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Mark, in 2006; and three brothers, Lowell, Ronald, and Peter. Memorial services will be held at 11 am, on Saturday, September 15, 2018, at Truax Congregational United Church of Christ, 1008 South 50th St. in Eau Claire, with Rev. David Stratton officiating. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church. Burial will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Eau Claire. Military honors will be presented by the American Legion Post 53.
