Obituary

George A. Johnson, 89, formally of 916 James St., Eau Claire died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at Oakwood Villa in Altoona. He was born May 30, 1916, in Eau Claire, to John and Anna (Christopherson) Johnson. He spent most of his young life living with John and Bada Shong of Augusta, WI.\r\nHe served in the Philippines with the U.S. Army during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.\r\nGeorge married Fern E. Bates on August 1, 1939 in Augusta. Fern died in 1963.He married Almeda C. Bloom at Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd on February 14, 1964.\r\nHe worked at Kelly Furniture Store for 13 years and then at Eau Claire Plumbing Supply until his retirement in 1977. He was an active member of The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd serving on various committees.\r\nHe is survived by his three children, daughters, Sonja (Robert) Wittwer and Bonnie (William) Kuehn, both of Eau Claire; son, Roger G. (Kay) Johnson of Opelika, AL; one step-son, James (Gloria) Bloom of Eau Claire; seven grandchildren, Steven (Joni) Wittwer of Holmen, Scott Kuehn, Amy (Bret) Brown, Greg (Krista) Johnson all of Eau Claire, Susan (Kyle) Schwarm of Madison, Cheree (Jim) McGlade and Jennifer (Brad) Saggus both of Opelika, AL; two step-grandchildren, Jeffery Bloom of Janesville, and Kris (Chris) Hansen of Wheeler; two sisters-in-law, Myrtle Bates of Fall Creek and Phyllis Johnson of Huntington Beach, CA; fourteen great-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and his dog Byron.\r\nGeorge was also preceded in death by his wife, Almeda, in 2000; his parents; a grandson, Michael Wittwer; and brother, Byron Johnson.\r\nMemorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 17, 2006, at Lutheran Church of The Good Shepherd with Pastor John E. Hosmann officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery where VFW Post #305 will present military graveside honors. Family and friends may call one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home is serving the family.\r\nFamily requests memorials be directed to Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1120 Cedar St., Eau Claire, WI 54703\r\n
