Obituary

George Glenn Gobler passed away peacefully on the afternoon of November 25, 2023. He was born on September 24, 1933 to Ruth (Boyle) and Leslie Gobler in Eau Claire. He grew up on the lower west side of Eau Claire and had fond memories of his old neighborhood. He attended St. Patrick's Grade School and graduated from St. Patrick's High School in 1951. Shortly after graduation he started employment at U.S. Rubber that eventually became Uniroyal until his retirement. George and Dereane (Kunferman), who met when they were in high school, were married on October 2, 1954. They quickly started a family and had their five boys and one daughter within the first ten years. The children were blessed to have George and Dereane as parents, they fostered a family centered environment which was filled with love and humor, with an emphasis on humor. Dad's dry wit was beautifully blended with Mom's over the top commentary. George was a believer in community service which was exhibited with the number of years he coached football and basketball at St. Pat's. He also served as the Athletic Director. His modesty prevented him of keeping his coaching record in those sports, but it was common knowledge that St. Pat's was the model program in the city's Catholic Grade School league for many years. Many of his former athletes appreciated his teaching the fine points of the game with a laid-back aura. He also coached Babe Ruth baseball for several years. He served on his parish's council and by virtue of being the oldest member of that body was appointed the Sexton of the cemetery by the pastor. He and other volunteers worked very hard to upgrade the records along with the other physical needs of the facility. George's love of sports kept him busy up until the fall of this year. He was an avid St. Pat's/Regis High School fan and he attended almost every home game. Other activities of interest centered around Dereane's bargain hunting at local department stores and garage sales. George didn't shop, he just drove, but you rarely saw one without the other. Their biggest joy was the births of the grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dad would just beam with pride when they visited. George is survived by his five sons; Mark (Sandy), Mike (Annie), John (Julie), Jim (Jane), and Steve (Brenda). Also, brother and sister in-law Dave and Clarice Kunferman along with many nieces and nephews. Grandchildren Jodie, Stacy (Randy), Katie (Joel), Sammy (Brock), Carlee, Jared, Mitchell, Molly (Sean), Brian (Kelsey), Meghan, Grace, Mackenzie (Dustin), Sydney, and Hannah. Even though there were only three males out the 14 he loved them all. What brought George more joy is when the great-grandchildren started to show up. Ally, Abby, Henning, Luella, Indigo, Banks and the recent arrival Remy brought extreme happiness. The brothers would like to give a special acknowledgement to grandson Brian for all his compassion and assistance with both dad and mom. George will be reunited with his loving wife of 68 years, Dereane, who passed away in August of 2022. He will also be welcomed by his daughter Mary Kathryn who passed away tragically at age 16. Others include his parents, his older protective sisters Joanne (Phil) Krause and Audrey (Lowell) Pettis and in-laws George Jr. (Delores) Kunferman and Donna (Bob) Schoen. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, December 2, 2023 at 10:30am at St. Patrick Parish, 316 Fulton St., with Father Michael Klos officiating. Visitation starts at 9:00am up until time of mass at the church. Inurnment is at St. Patrick Cemetery, Eau Claire with a luncheon served at the Regis High School Cafeteria following.
