Obituary

George E. Kumferman, 89, of Eau Claire, passed away on Friday, November 21, 2014, at Mayo Clinic Health Systems, Eau Claire Hospital. George was born in Akeley, MN, on July 12, 1925, a son of George and Lucille (Bell) Kumferman. He graduated from Eau Claire Sr. High School with the Class of 1942, and attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison earning his bachelor's degree. George enlisted in the Navy in 1943 at the age of 17. He served on a destroyer escort in the Pacific where he survived a typhoon, a kamikaze attack and many other battles. He also was offshore and witnessed the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima, and was honorably discharged in 1946. On November 6, 1947, George married the love of his life, Delores R. Kneeland, in Eau Claire. He proudly served the City of Eau Claire for 34 years in many capacities including, city assessor, acting city manager and retiring as the director of administration in 1985. George was a member of Eau Claire Noon Lions Club, Rolling Wheels (1947), Antique Rolling Wheels (Charter Member-1992), Sun City Power Riders (1985), and Charter Member of Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. George is survived by his wife of 67 years, Delores; son, George (Renate) Kumferman of Eau Claire; daughter, Rebecca (Patrick Hansen) Adams of Farmington, MN; three grandsons, Aaron (Rachael) Kumferman of Plainfield, WI, Mark Kumferman of North Dakota, and Jason (fiancée, Margaret Adkins) Adams of Eau Claire; several great-grandchildren; brother, David (Clarice) Kumferman; sister, Dereane (George) Gobler; and also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Sara Adams; and sister, Donna Schoen. He had a profound love for his family, his country, his city, his church and his motorcycles. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26, 2014, at Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd, 1120 Cedar St. in Eau Claire, with Pastor Michael Wollman officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Wednesday at the church. Interment will be at a later date in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Cemetery near Spooner, WI. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd Foundation Fund.
