Obituary

CWO4 George C. Werth, Sr. USCG (Retired), 93, of Eau Claire and Town of Lafayette, died Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at Oakwood Villa in Altoona. He was born on March 3, 1922, in Eau Claire to Robert and Clara (Lischitzki) Werth and graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School with the Class of 1939. On July 10, 1940, George enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served continuously until retiring on August 1, 1966, as a Chief Warrant Officer 4. George married Edna Taylor on February 28, 1942, and later divorced on May 18, 1961. Upon retirement, he married Geraldine (Faast) Walsh on July 15, 1967, which ended with her death on November 16, 2011. Following retirement, he was employed as a purchasing agent for Prophet Foods, Greyhound Food Management and Professional Food-Service Management at University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from 1966 thru December 1977. George was a life member of the USCG Chief Warrant & Warrant Officers Association, Military Officers Association of America, VFW Post 305, and a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Eau Claire. George is survived by his step-son, Thomas C. Walsh of Milwaukee, WI; a son, George C. Werth, Jr. of New Mexico; and two granddaughters. He is preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; sister, Lillian Bartlett; and a brother, Clifford "Kip" Werth. In accordance with his wishes, no funeral services will be held. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m., on Monday, July 20, 2015, at Forest Hill Cemetery with Pastor Rolf Nestigen officiating. Military rites will be conducted by VFW Post 305. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be sent to Mayo Clinic Health Systems Development, P.O. Box 4105, Eau Claire, WI 54702-4105.
