Obituary

George Herbert Zich, 76, of the Town of Brunswick died Monday, February 19, 2007, at home. He was born in Eau Claire at Luther Hospital on August 17, 1930, the son of Herbert and Emma (Prieve) Zich.\r\nHis family belonged to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Fall Creek from which George received his baptism and confirmation.\r\nGeorge graduated from Fall Creek High School with the class of 1948 and attended one year at Eau Claire Teachers College which is now UW-Eau Claire. Sports were a large part of his life for many years in which he participated in basketball and softball at school and with leagues. George also played football during his one year of college.\r\nHe learned plastering, texturing, floor sanding, chimney building, and you name it from his father who took great pride in a straight corner and getting the work correct.\r\nGeorge was married to Betty Lou Lund on October 16, 1951, by Pastor Jule Bittner at St. Paul's Lutheran Church parsonage in Fall Creek. After a honeymoon trip to One Sided Lake in Ontario they had only a short time together until George left for the service on December 2, 1951. His unit of the Army was sent to Korea where he served until late 1953. They took part in the Pork Chop Hill Battle, and then he was fortunate enough because he could type that he was made Supply Sargeant. Several of his buddies are still in touch.\r\nUpon his discharge George and Betty Lou lived in Eau Claire and he continued working with his dad until he became a letter carrier at the Eau Claire Postal Service. He retired on January 3, 1993, with 36 years of service to his government. George and Betty farmed in the town of Brunswick raising cattle for many years.\r\nHealth issues have been part of George's life since 1989. Our very special doctor once told him "If there is anything else you could have you will find it." He accepted all the treatments with no complaining and strong faith. The family is grateful for his spirit and humor. He was always feisty and it carried him over the rough spots. \r\nGeorge and his family would like to thank the Messiah Lutheran Church of Eau Claire (Pastor Paul Tiefel, Pastor Mark Gullerud, and the entire staff) for all of their support and providing home support for spiritual matters. Also a very special thanks to Dr. Leslie Spitz for so many years of really looking out for George's many issues. Along with so many more health care providers that are too numerous to mention.\r\nGeorge is survived by his wife, Betty Lou; two sons, Brian (Jayne) and Dwain (Beth) both of Eau Claire County; three grandchildren, Brianna, Jacob, and Sarah; a great granddaughter, Dakota; two sisters, Rose Lange and Gladys Young both of Eau Claire; a brother, David Zich of St. Louis Park, MN; many extended relatives and close friends; and his Rat Terrier, Abby. \r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Emma Zich; in-laws, Jacob and Gertrude Lund; brother, Robert Zich; his grandson and good buddy, Andrew that left us in an accident in May 2006; and four godchildren, Sandy Odegard Davis, Mark Zich, Jolene Beekman Albrecht, and Kim Boldon Suda.\r\nGeorge and Betty Lou made the decision for private commitment some years ago and thank you all for honoring that request.\r\nFamily memorial services were held today at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 22, 2007, at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home, with Pastor Paul M. Tiefel and Pastor Mark Gullerud officiating. Burial was in Lakeview Cemetery.\r\nThank you Lord, George has no more itching and he is resting in your peace. Thank you also to Dwain and Beth for your ongoing steadfast support of George for an extended time. \r\n
