Gerald L. "Jerry" Schaefer, 86, of Altoona, passed away on Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Oakwood Villa Nursing home in Altoona. Jerry was born on June 1, 1927, in Eau Claire, to Ervin Sr. and Julia (Ganong) Schaefer. He was drafted into the US Army between his junior and senior years of high school and served as a lineman in Germany during WWII. On January 15, 1955, Jerry married Roberta "Bobbi" McInnis at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Eau Claire and together they had three children. Jerry was employed for the Eau Claire School District for 35 years, retiring as a maintenance supervisor at North High School. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and spending time with his grandchildren and family. Jerry is survived by his wife of 59 years, Bobbi; 1 son, Steve (Sandy) of Schofield; 2 daughters, Sue (Larry) Guenther of Beloit, and Sandy (Ron "Rooster") Nelson of Eau Claire; 6 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Ervin Jr. (Marcie) Schaefer and Larry Schaefer; 1 sister, Margaret (Jim) Schambeau; and also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; and 1 sister Betty Dentice. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Clairemont and Oakwood Villa Nursing Home for such wonderful care given to Jerry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Alzheimer's Association of Greater Wisconsin 404 ½ N. Bridge St. Chippewa Falls, WI 54729 A private graveside service will be held at the Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum in Eau Claire at a later date. Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral and Cremation Services is assisting the family with arrangements.
