Glen L. "Spike" Shafer, 81, of Eau Claire, passed away at Grace Woodlands Assisted Living in Eau Claire, on Sunday, May 11, 2014. He was born on February 14, 1933, in Black River Falls, WI, to Lloyd and Julia (Johnson) Shafer. Glen attended Altoona High School and graduated with the Class of 1952. He participated in student council and played for the Railroader basketball team that went to state during his senior year. After high school, he went to work at Uniroyal and retired after 39 years. After retirement, Glen worked for Eau Claire Passenger Service for 10 years. On October 22, 1955, Glen married Eunice Sokup at St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Eau Claire. He was an active member of the parish for 58 years. He enjoyed dancing, traveling and spending winters in the south. He also loved to engage in a good debate. Our dad was a very caring person and a devoted family man who always put our needs before his own. He was always proud to support us in all our endeavors, especially those involving any sort of sports. Glen is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eunice; four children, Steven (Linda) Shafer, Sandra (Bill) Cleaver, David (Wanda) Shafer and Paul (Kathleen) Shafer; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Heather), Kevin and Nick Shafer, Matthew Cleaver, Seth and Alexis Shafer, and Owen and Malia Shafer; two great-grandchildren, Grace and Shelby Shafer; three sisters, Mona Kleist, Deanna Shafer and Peggy Anderson; one sister-in-law, Annette Shafer; and also by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Robert and William Shafer; and one sister, Betty Passon. The family would like to thank the staff at Grace Woodlands for the wonderful care shown to Glen. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 p.m. (Noon) on Friday, May 16, 2014, at St James the Greater Catholic Church, 2502 11th St. with Father John Schultz officiating. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the church. Entombment will be in the Resurrection Mausoleum in Calvary Cemetery in Eau Claire.
