Obituary

Gordon J. Steffen, age 82 of Eau Claire, died peacefully on Wednesday, August 07, 2013, at the Clairemont Nursing Home. He was born to John & Dorothy (Palmer) Steffen in Eau Claire, WI, on October 31, 1930. Gordy graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School in 1948. He then went on to graduate from Eau Claire Teachers College, now know as UW Eau Claire. Gordy had many friends that he grew up with and followed him throughout his life. He was a gifted athlete running track in high school and college. He was known for his speed, therefore given the nickname of "Flash Gordon." He also played football in high school and college being part of the Bluegold 1948 State Champion team, coached by Ade Olson. On April 8, 1955, Gordy married Judith Erickson in Minneapolis, MN. Fulfilling his love of automobiles, Gordy worked at Wood Motors through school, and after graduating from college, he went to work for GM with his last position being district manager. He then came back with his family to Eau Claire to work for Wood Motors and later Markquart Chevrolet, where he received the Loyalty Award, frequently referred to as the "Gordy Steffen Award." Gordy loved his working career and his many friends he met and worked with; but the love of his life was his wife and their family they had together. He was a devoted husband and loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who will be greatly missed by his family. He was a supporter of his children and grandchildrens events, always being his families biggest fan. Gordy was devoted to his faith and active in the church, growing up serving as an acolyte, later serving many years on the Vestry as Junior and Senior Warden at Christ Church Cathedral in Eau Claire. Gordon is survived by his wife of 58 years, Judith; children, Debbie (Jeff) Koppa, Mark (Kathy), Jeff (Mary), and Ann (Keith) Hanson; grandchildren, Eric, Darren (Kamila), & Jonathan Koppa, Misty (Tory) Freed, Matthew (Amanda) Steffen, Derek & Brent Steffen, and Kristina & Olivia Hanson; great-grandchildren, DJ, Jessica & Elektra Koppa, Liam Koppa, Logan, Evan, Nolan, & Breanna Freed, and Caden Steffen; niece, Vickie Etters, and nephew, Grant Ritter Jr. along with other relatives and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Frances (Grant) Ritter; and his father and mother-in-law, Orville & Helen Erickson. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 PM on Friday, August 9, 2013, at Lenmark Gomsrud Linn Funeral Home, 814 First Ave. in Eau Claire. Requiem Eucharist will be at 11 AM on Saturday, August 10, 2013, at Christ Church Cathedral, 510 S. Farwell St. in Eau Claire, with a visitation one hour prior to the Mass at church. The Very Rev.
