Hazel Jane Nelson passed peacefully to her eternal home on Friday, January 2, 2015, in Eau Claire, WI. Hazel was born March 10, 1922, in Eau Claire to Gilbert and Cecelia (Rolfs) Herges. She graduated from Eau Claire Senior High School in 1939. Hazel earned her Bachelor's Degree in education in 1943, at Eau Claire State Teachers College, now known as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Her father owned Herges Printing Shop and died at a young age, leaving behind his wife; Hazel, age 2; and infant son, Donald. Raised by her widowed mother during the Depression, Hazel was proud that she put herself through college by working at Rexall Drugstore on the "Four Corners" in downtown Eau Claire. Hazel began her teaching career in Stephenson, MI, where she met her future husband, Bernard Nelson. She returned to Eau Claire and began teaching for the Eau Claire Area School District at various elementary schools, primarily Little Red School, where she taught kindergarten. She adored children! Hazel and Bernie were married August 14, 1949, in De Pere, WI. They were blessed with a daughter, Jane. Mother and daughter cherished a special friendship throughout Hazel's life. Their South Dewey Street home meant the world to Hazel. She loved to graciously entertain at dinner parties and luncheons for her many friends. "The more the merrier," Hazel always said. Hazel loved music and the theater and was an accomplished piano player. She also was a member of the Eau Claire Woman's Club and American Legion Unit 53 Auxiliary. Active for many years, Hazel enjoyed downhill and cross country skiing. She was on golf leagues at Princeton Valley and Lowes Creek golf courses. She was part of the longest existing bowling team at Wagner's Bowling Lanes. Hazel loved the water and the sun, enjoying their pontoon boat at Lake Altoona. Water aerobics at the YMCA and walking her dogs were other favorite pastimes. Hazel and Bernie both retired in June 1977. After retirement, Hazel performed many volunteer hours, playing piano and assisting with bingo at nursing homes. Hazel traveled throughout the world with her husband, daughter and grandson. Some of Hazel's favorite destinations included Scandinavia, China, Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Mexico, Canada and all 50 states. One of Hazel's greatest joys was her grandson, Ross, who arrived from South Korea five days after her husband's unexpected death on April 3, 1996. She enjoyed all of Ross' events -- sports, plays, piano recitals, church and Boy Scouts. Throughout her adult life, Hazel also had special canine companions - Schnapps, Schnapps II, Princess, Danny and Angel, who now are reunited with her. Hazel was a member of First Congregational Church, where she sang in the choir and enjoyed the inspirational music. She had an abiding faith in God, which was the bedrock of her life. "Trust in the good Lord" was her mantra, maintaining a positive outlook throughout her life. Hazel and family were deeply appreciative of the loving care she received at Orchard Hills Assisted Living and Dove Healthcare West in Eau Claire. Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Steve Brandvold; grandson, Ross Brandvold; special family friend, Dolores Brandvold, all of Eau Claire; sister-in-law, Lori Nelson of Grand Haven, Mich.; nieces; a nephew; and so many wonderful friends. Preceding her in death were her husband; parents; brother; and brother-in-law, Edwin.
