Obituary

HENRY O. STRAND, 80, Eau Claire, died Thursday, April 1, 1999 in Eau Claire. Hank was born April 13, 1918 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, to Louis and Minnie (Hanson) Strand. He attended the Model School, Eau Claire Senior High School and Wisconsin State Teacher's College, all in Eau Claire. Joining the Army Air Corps before World War II, he served as Communications Chief for the Fifth Bomber Command in New Guinea, and later set up and operated a radio/radar training school in Kansas for B-29 crews.\r\nHe worked at Metropolitan Life Insurance and later North American Life Insurance, rising to Regional Sales Manager for Western Wisconsin before retiring in 1982. He was founding president of Chartered Life Underwriters here.\r\nHank also found time to serve SCORE, a volunteer organization assisting small businessmen; Sons of Norway as president, twice; American Legion, VFW, First Lutheran Council and the American Cancer Society.\r\nHank was an avid member of Kiwanis for over 25 years, serving as club secretary, club president, district lieutenant governor and district governor. His great interest was the Eau Claire club's Paul Bunyan Logging Camp project, on which he worked tirelessly, raising funds for new buildings and exhibits, managing camp operations, writing newsletters, organizing the camp's Internet web site, and handling an unending list of details that helped make the camp successful.\r\nBetty Jeanne Cooper and Hank married Oct. 29, 1945 at St Patrick's Church in Eau Claire. He is survived by his wife, eight children, Karen, Marc (wife Lisa Reiman-Strand, children Ben, Nick, and Elizabeth Strand), Jon, Brian (children Alex, Brian, and Maddie Strand), Sheila, David, Mary (husband Tom Fraser, son Jack Strand), and Patrick; two sisters, Gloria Suring and Janna Gunderson; two brothers, Alvin (wife Frankie) and David (wife Gladys); sister-in-law, Marjorie Strand; and several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by infant twin children, Peter and Mary Jeanne; parents Louis and Minnie Strand; and brother Lionel.\r\nFuneral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 5, 1999 at First Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. Duane C. Pederson officiating. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.\r\nMemorials may be given to the Paul Bunyan Logging Camp in Eau Claire.\r\nHank was a great husband and dad. We will miss him very much.
