Obituary

HENRY AUGUST WACHTER, 90, of 1620 Drummond Street, Eau Claire, died Friday, January 7, 2000, at Syverson Home. \r\nHank was born at his family home in Chicago, Illinois, on March 3, 1909. His parents were Antoinette Fischer and John Andrew Wachter. He spent most of his life in Chicago, Lake Zurich, Riverside, Glenview, and Arlington Heights, Illinois. His most engaging attribute was his marvelous sense of humor. He was an avid Chicago White Sox, Bears, and Bulls fan. He was graduated from the University of Illinois, where he met his wife of 63 years, Lorene C. Weichel. At the university he participated in campus musical and drama events, the polo team, the United States Cavalry Reserve, and his fraternity, Sigma Phi Epsilon.\r\nDuring World War II Hank served in the Army Ordnance Division, attaining the rank of captain. Following the War, he pursued a career in business and finance and raised two daughters, Kay and Nancy. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus in Glenview, was a Commander of the American Legion Post of Riverside, and he refereed high school football for many years.\r\nHenry is survived by his wife Lorene and his daughters, Kay Kennedy of Eau Claire and Nancy Howard of Danville, Indiana, and ten grandchildren. The Kennedy grandchildren are: Sarah (Mark) Swanson, Richfield, Minnesota, Ann (Dane) Gerszik, Black River Falls, Margaret (John) Poast, Gulf Breeze, Florida, Kathryn (John) Schulte, Naperville, Illinois, Richard (Laura Kazlow) Kennedy, Lafayette, Louisiana, Elizabeth (Eric) Wiechert, Chicago Illinois, Charlie Kennedy, Eau Claire, and the Howard grandchildren: Carrie (Jeff) Hatfield, Valparaiso, Indiana, Megan (Stuart) Allison, Grand Rapids, Michigan, and John Howard, Chicago, Illinois. Ten great-grandchildren, sister-in-law, Margaret Weichel, and Wachter nieces and nephews also survive him. \r\nHe was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Herbert (Anna), Robert, Francis (Edna); sisters, Stella (Harold) Tascher, Ruth (Lyman) Templin; his nephew, John Templin; and his brother-in-law, Elmer Weichel.\r\nA mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Tuesday at St. Olaf Catholic Church with Father Frank Corradi officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery in the spring. Friends may call an hour before the Liturgy, Tuesday at the church. Lenmark-Gomsrud-Linn Funeral and Cremation services is serving the family. The family requests that memorials be sent to the St. Olaf Building Fund.\r\nWe will sorely miss our "Papa Bear, "his compassion, his humor-even his horrendous puns. Our family thanks the wonderful staff and chaplains at the Syverson Home for their compassionate care. We wish you could have known him as we did.
